ACS Surgery: Principles and Practice

Rate this book

This book is a combined WebMD/American College of Surgeons' effort to apply the best thinking to the practice of modern surgery. It is loaded with algorithms, line drawings, and extensive tables that are very well done and very useful. At the end of most chapters is a discussion by the author that ties together all the concepts in the chapter. Particularly useful are several chapters discussing the special categories of treatment of the elderly patient and the pregnant surgical patient. These are somewhat unique and very insightful chapters. A typical, excellent chapter is the one on asymptomatic carotid bruit. It ties together all the large studies on this topic and presents the data in a way that the reader is able to understand the issues and make decisions on this often-debated topic. It gives a very good perspective of its disease and its treatment. There is one last, excellent section on intensive care medicine. Particularly noteworthy and useful are the chapters on the evaluation of fever and nutrition. These chapters lend themselves very well to the ACS format and certainly provide the reader with the required information to deal with these issues. I could visualize a new intern in surgery reading this before going to see her first patient with fever.

This book has been assembled in a very effective manner by the editorial board of the ACS. It clearly presents the best surgical thinking for a variety of diseases. It is easy to read and yet detailed in its content. It is an excellent addition to our surgical literature and one that will be very useful to residents learning this difficult area as well as to practicing surgeons who want to be current.
