Porter offers excellent insights into the development of hatred and fear of the Jews by Christian Poles, attitudes which could certainly account for the Poles ultimate complicity in the Nazi murder of the Jews.

Porter makes a nice case for Romantic nationalism being bunkum and attempts to tease out the ways in which xenophobic nationalism came to the fore in Poland around the turn of the century. He rightly focuses on the National Democracy movement and awkwardly argues that the perception of historical time changed, making the earlier utopian vision of Polish inclusive nationalism insufficient.
