I have a shelf for the American Wilderness books in my home library. I enjoyed looking at the pictures for nearly forty years before I took the time to read the text of the essays. The test is as interesting as the pictures, and that gets a 5 star rating.
Photographer Dean Brown fell to his death when he climbed Table Mountain. His last photograph is on pp 98-99.

184 pages. Has Index, Bibliography, and Acknowledgement and Picture Credits. Lots of pictures of flora, fauna, topographical features that may be considered visually impressive but also seem quite repetitious. Six Chapters with text of descriptions of local areas and occasional conversations with local residents. It doesn't seem to offer anything for the general reader, and actual scientists/scholars would presumably prefer more scholarly works. Drawback minimal to no picture captions. Does mention Appalachian Trail and Walden.

We found this book at the dump! And it has the BEST pictures of VERMONT in it! Including the Notch and Mount Mansfield! And you know what? When I looked I kind of thought the pictures weren't as good as mama's, but I still asked her if she took any of them and she said no because she wasn't even BORN when this book was written! It was written in 1974 which means even MIMI was a little girl then! That's how old it is. But just because it's old doesn't mean it's not GOOD and this one is a good one! Plus it was free!
I can't read it at all. It has way too many words for me. But I have time.
