Kira has never listened to the rain on the roof, swum in a lake or seen a cloud. All of those things need water, and in Kira's world nearly all of the water has disappeared due to the ecological disasters created generations earlier. What remains is strictly rationed by the government. Kira never doubts this system until the day she discovers a wonderful gift—she can bring ...more

Good read, creative premise. Can't wait to read the sequel.

Reading for the Wonderfully wicked read-a-thon

This was one of those random books I picked up at HPB not knowing anything about it. The cover intrigued, and when I read the back it did as well. How can anyone not live without water, and on rations? I'm sure all over the world some countries do. I just can't wrap my head around it though. I think another thing that stuck out to me about this particular "dystopian" is that in my mind it's totally possible (except for the girl bringing forth water.

There are a billion dystopians out there right now. And a lot of them are based on ecological premeses. But it’s been a while since I read one so compelling as debut author Denise Getson‘s DRY SOULS.

DRY SOULS follows Kira, a teen girl who can hardly remember her mom, and has grown up at an all-girls orphanage. She’s never quite fit in with the other girls, and when she finds a flower — something no one has seen in years, since the water is too tightly regulated to support purely aesthetic plantl

Can you imagine a time where the world runs out of water? This book, Dry Souls, takes a dive into that universe, where we find one girl who might be able to save the whole world. Kira grew up in a girls home and is the outacst of the girls. Her only "friend" is the flower she keeps hidden. She saves a swallow of her daily water to feed the flower, until one day when she merely wishes for water. She notices a little puddle surround the flower, and she realizes she's been given a power. This is an interesting situation. Set in the future, the people of earth have devestated the planet and water is more valuable than gold.

One young orphan, Kira, suddenly develops the ability to bring forth water just by willing it. But there are watchers who want the girl's talent for their own control and profit. Taken into custody, the girl learns that the devestation may not be all that it is said to be and she is not the first to have shown this miraculous ability.

The issue at stake here is

While based on an interesting concept, I must say that I was very disappointed with this book. It was poorly written, feeling more like a sequence of events than a story. The characters never came to life to me and no event seemed to have any significance beyond moving us to the next event in the underdeveloped plot. Also, nothing ever gets explained satisfactorily, although this last is more of a personal issue than an issue with the writing. Dry Souls is a tolerable read with an interesting pr ...more

In a world running out of water, water is strictly rationed by the government. Kira has a talent, a talent that may save the world: she can make water. She travels with a friend to go put water in a lake that used to give the world lots of water. A man from the government finds her and tells her that her mom, who Kira never met, had the same talent as her and used it for them, but something's off about him...

Great book.

“I glance at the sky, but there are no clouds. There are never clouds. I know what clouds look like only because of the digital images in our lessons at school. I know someone who has been north, to the mountains, and swears she saw clouds. Perhaps she’s telling the truth, but I doubt it.” 0 likes
