A wealthy American businessman is murdered in his English manor house, his head blown off by a double-barrelled shotgun - whodunit and why?

The Valley of Fear is one of the better Sherlock Holmes stories but it’s still a fairly mediocre read. It’s a fine story of revenge and intrigue full of American gangsters and Freemasons (like A Study in Scarlet, Arthur Conan Doyle clearly viewed the United States as a romantically dangerous country full of rogues!), and the mystery is well put-together.

Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes story The Valley of Fear is translated into a graphic novel excellently by Ian Edginton and the artwork of INJ Culbard. Culbard's style is stark, graphic and dark, echoing the ligne claire style of strong lines and clear colours Herge used for Tintin. The Valley of Fear is a twisting tale of secrets and terror, claustrophobically contained within the moat bound country house of Birlstone Manor and the mysterious murder of the rich country gentleman John Douglas, a t ...more

Sherlock investigates the murder of an English gentleman in an old castle home.

This story did not grasp my interest and I had to restart it several times. In the end, I had to skim to finish it.

I think I prefer sherlock in his original format...

This Sherlock Holmes graphic novel grabbed my attention while I was helping the hubby find graphic novels at the library. Since I love Holmes and mysteries and needed another library book to help me wrap up the I Love Library Books Challenge, it seemed like it really needed to come home with me. Graphic novels aren't my favorite medium for reading, but I have to say that they do help one quickly add another notch to the reading belt.

The Valley of Fear is loosely based on real events in late 19t

A constância dos olho ...more

Edginton sees part of the key to his success coming from good relationships with artists, especially D'Israeli and Steve Yeowell as well as Steve Pugh and Mike Collins. He is best known for his steampunk/alternative history work (often with the artist D'Israeli) and is the co-creator of Scarlet Traces, a sequel to their adaptation of H.G. Wells' The War of the Worlds. With 2000 AD we has written L ...more
