Zany visual definitions and amusing wordplay teach little ones a cluster of new words that contain the names of insects, from frANTic to TICKlish to staGNATe, in the ingenious sequel to the best-seller, ANTics!
Bug Off! Story and Illustrations By Cathi Hepworth Grade Levels: App. 2-4 DRA/Lexile Measure/GLE: n/a Reviewed By Aaron Carter
This unique book identifies the names of various insects in everyday words, and then illustrates them in human-like actions and scenarios. For example, "Beeper" shows a bee dressed as a doctor with its beeper signaling, "Beefy" shows a muscular bee beside weights, and "Behemoth" has a monstrous moth towering over a devastated city. The illustrations are well executed and humorous. Overall, I found this to be an interesting and unconventional, yet effective, way to teach new and sometimes difficult vocabulary.
3.75 stars This book with the bug off! First didn't attract me! I almost put in back on the shelf into the "maybe later" category. But it was fANTastic ..Get it... Words that have roach, ant, lice, ticks, moth, bee mites and gnats (yes siGNATure was my favorite!
Not a story, but a series of words that have insect names in them, e.g. siGNATures or romANTic. If you can't read yet (Dex at 4 is just learning) this book doesn't really make a whole lot of sense.
Illustrations correspond in theme and insect. Very fun to look at.
