Strength & Honor. Not just words from the movie Gladiator but a code that NBA player and Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant seems to live by. He even signs fan letters with this mantra. That's because Kobe embodies everything that makes a real warrior. "Veni. Vedi. Vici." That phrase is Latin for "I came, I saw, I conquered." More words the warrior Kobe follows. These phrases are glimpses into Kobe's true nature, the philosophy that guides him, and the gladiator's path he walks each day of his life. There is a reason why excellence is a way of being for this superstar. This is the real essence of the Kobe Bryant. In this spirit, sportswriter and author Pat Mixon has written an unauthorized look at Kobe Bryant. But THE KOBE CODE takes a unique spin on the traditional biography. This book was basically a Kobe love-fest. If I hear the word warrior one more time...It had very little about the athlete's life and way to much about how wonderful Kobe is. I hoped for more.
Back in 2011, I got 2 copies of this book. One for me, and another for a young basketball player I mentored. We read and discussed each principle together and it really helped me connect with my mentee because of Kobe’s relatability and mentality. Not a perfect book by far, but I found it to be helpful.
My experience with this book was energizing and motivational. I selected this book because I am a Los Angeles Lakers fan and Kobe Bryant is the star of the Lakers. I had a great time with this book since he describes and explains his drive and fire for the game of basketball. My personal favorite sport is football however, there are a lot of similarities in the two sports that it kept my interest from start to finish.
One of my favorite quotes from this book which is is also one of his most famous quotes is, “Passion is the fuel for success”(56). This quote I believe is the best quote to describe Kobe and his passion. He is one of the most intense athletes to ever play the game and it shows with how well he plays the game and his overall work ethic. His dedication to the sport and to the his improvement as a player is detailed in this book. One of these stories tells how he called on a Lakers athletic trainer at three in the morning in order to open the facility for him since he wanted to start practicing early!
I believe Kobe has shaped and formed his identity with how he plays the game of basketball and how he works hard in order to play great on the basketball court. Kobe has always been known to be one of the hardest working player, not just in basketball but an all-inclusive athlete. He wanted to be better than Michael Jordan and he says that's what his drive has been since the beginning. It is interesting how his identity was formed through the success of someone else.
I would recommend this book to a variety of people. The first group I would recommend this book to is any sports team, this book can inspire anyone to work hard at anything they do specially in sports. I would also give it to an athlete who has deviated from his passion or drive for any given sport as Kobe describe how he finds motivation to keep going in everything he does. I would lastly recommend this book to any basketball fan because this book talks about one of the greatest players of all time and how hard he works everyday to be his best.
