“Every February, we celebrate the birthday of the sixteenth president of the United States, Abraham Lincoln,” Patricia A. Pingry begins in her children’s book, The Story of Abraham Lincoln.
~ What ~ This twenty-four-page board book with rounded corners targets children ages two to five years old. With no scary scenes, it partially contains the story of America’s sixteenth president. Colorful, engaging illustrations cover both sides of the pages with an easy-to-read font size.
The book explains that Abraham Lincoln was born in Kentucky in a log cabin but moved to Indiana at the age of seven, worked on a farm, told funny stories, and became a lawyer. He married Mary Todd, became America’s president, and was involved in the Civil War where he fought to end slavery in the Confederate states. The ending includes how a monument was named after him and his face is depicted on our currency.
~Why ~ This is an educational story about our president and parts of his life. I appreciate it mentioned Abe’s family was poor, his mother died when he was young, and that he was against slavery, later writing the Emancipation Proclamation. There is enough activity in the pictures to keep young ones interested while reading.
~ Why Not ~ Some may not like a history book that discusses slavery, but it was an integral part of the American Civil War. There are many complicated words that young ones may not understand or comprehend, but they could be explained by the reader. The book may be too hard for beginner readers with its three-to-five-syllable words.
~ Wish ~ With the board book being for toddlers, its contents are more for kindergartens and first graders who may want to know the history of America. I wish it had less detail for its targeted audience or reformatted into a regular book for older children.
~ Want ~ If you are looking for a series about famous people, the author has several books for young ones available, and this one on Honest Abe will give a young one plenty to learn about a past U.S. president.
Thanks to Hachette Book Group, WorthyKids, and the author for this complimentary book that I am under no obligation to review.
The Story of Abraham Lincoln and how he was the sixteenth president of the United States. We celebrate his birthday on February 12. He was born in 1809 to a poor family. His mother passed away when he was 10 years old. He loved to read and write and he studied to become a lawyer. It discussed the issue of slavery and how he was opposed to it. This led to a divided country and the start of the Confederate States of America. He led us in the Civil War and he voted to end slavery by writing a proclamation.
I would recommend this awesome book about Lincoln’s life to children aged 2-6. I immensely enjoyed how the book was a building block to start teaching history to our children. It keeps everything at their level and it’s not to heavy. It’s contained a very basic overall look at his life. I liked how it covered how against slavery he was and what he did to try and end it. The illustrations were very colorful and appealing to keep our children’s attention while they learn a little about history.
"I received this book free from the publisher, Hachette Book Group/Faithwords/ Worthy Kids for my honest review.”

I was surprised to see board books about Presidents!
This provides a short overview of the life of President Lincoln. It would be good introduction to talk with your young child about our 16th President as it gives just a glimpse into his life from boyhood to the presidency.
The illustrations are appealing with cute kids in the scenes. One thing I like is that the books end with a quote related to the President.
This set would be a good way to introduce children to a little bit of history and would go well with class lessons in the early elementary classroom for President's Day.
I found out there is a series of books including Rosa Parks, The Mayflower, The Star Spangled Banner, and Martin Luther King, Jr.
I received copies of these books from Hachette book group for my honest review. Thank you.
Who was Abraham Lincoln and why do we celebrate his birthday every February with a national holiday? THE STORY OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN board book includes a series of facts and insights to help your child understand the importance of the sixteenth president of the United States.
Author Patricia A. Pingry uses simple words combined with beautiful illustrations from Jesús López and have produced a fascinating book, THE STORY OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN. I enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.
In The Story of Abraham Lincoln, Patricia A. Pingry does an excellent job of presenting Abraham's presidency to little learners. Although I am not a huge history fan, I actually felt like a lot could be learned from this small book. The graphics helped to illustrate the main points and keeps children from losing interest or getting bored. I do think parts of the book were still dull and a bit challenging for a child to understand, however, that also could be because I am not a big historical person.
Who exactly was Abraham Lincoln? Even the youngest learner will come away with the who, the what, and the why. Books for children and about our American History are way up on my list. Pingry does a great job telling little ones about this American hero, Abraham Lincoln. The illustrations are superb and will keep even the youngest student turning the pages. Highly recommended for the home school library and young children.
This board book has fun and colorful illustrations to add rich details to this introduction to Abraham Lincoln. It provides concise and important details of Lincoln's life through his important act of freeing slaves. Parents and caregivers will delight in discussing and comparing life in the 1800's to now as well as important political issues that shaped the USA.
Baby biography of the great Abe Lincoln. it makes clear that the civil war was about enslavement, which I wasn't necessarily expecting from a board book.
Next up - Team of Rivals or Lincoln in the Bardo??
I think this is another perfect book to read to children that would go along with the core curriculum it provides an interesting story about one of our nation's greatest president's. (Maybe I'm a little bias saying that, but still!) I think it's important even at an early age to get them familiar with our history, however how small we start off. The book is a quick read and still has a fun story to go along with President Lincoln's story. Great book for teachers and children to enjoy.
This is a great Biography book for children. It contains just the right about of words and pictures. It is easy to understand, fun to look at, and very entertaining to read.
