"Fashioned by Faith" is an excellent Christian living book about modesty and true beauty. At the back of the book, there's also a quick-to-do 45-day Bible study on the same topics.
At the beginning of each chapter, a teen boy gave his perspective on what girls wear (though the boys all said the same sort of things). The author then talked about what modesty is, the heart-issues behind wanting to get attention from boys, some useful guidelines for clothing that will help you not show too much while wearing and moving around in clothing, and a few style tips for using stylish clothing in a modest way. She also quoted Scripture and explained what God has told us about modesty, beauty, and our bodies.
This book was written in an easy-to-understand level for teens, but the author made some great points for adult women as well. I was expecting a little more about how to dress "in fashion," but it was mostly about how to wear "in fashion" clothing in modest ways (layering, etc.). Also, much of the book focused on the motives behind wearing immodest clothing, why Christian women should wear modest clothing out of consideration for others, eating disorders, and trusting God. She described various incidents in her life that illustrated her points. For example, God kept providing her with work even when her agents told her no one would hire her if she refused to model underwear, etc. So you also learn some about the modeling industry.
There were several pictures of the author from various photo shoots and from her "normal life." Personally, I thought some of the clothing she was wearing pushed the edge of modest. Ironically, in the only picture where she looks like she wouldn't blow away if the wind blew too hard, her agent was apparently pressuring her to lose some weight because she was "too heavy." Go figure.
I've read all of this modesty information before, but I think this was one of the better books I've read on the topic. I'd recommend this book to girls and women, especially those struggling with why modesty matters.
I received this book free from the publisher through the BookSneeze book review bloggers program.
I think we would all agree that yes, what we wear definitely matters. I'm sure I'm not the only one who has a boost of self-confidence when I do my hair, wear makeup, and actually put some effort into my outfit in the morning. And that my attention goes to people based on their wearing - some good and some bad attention.
In her new book, Fashioned by Faith, international model Rachel Lee Carter explores the question of "Can you look great and still honor God?" And her resounding answer is yes and she gives a number of examples from her own career on why she truly believes you can dress well while still dressing modestly.
Fashioned by Faith is mainly written for young women to help them understand why they should dress modestly while it seems that women who dress immodestly are the ones who get all the attention. The book is split into nine chapters that each focus on a specific element of fashion and dressing modestly including why you should dress modestly and tips for doing so. Each of those chapters is then split into four sections - a young man's thoughts on modest young women, a section of Rachel's thoughts and experiences, a section about God's thoughts on the subject, and finally a section with questions for the reader to answer with their own thoughts.
I think that this book was well-written and would be helpful for its specific audience. I think it could be a helpful tool for a parent trying to help their young woman understand why they don't have to show off their boob, butt, or belly to get attention. The layout makes it very easy to read, and I actually found Rachel's stories of her modeling career fascinating to see the different types of shoots she'd gotten to experience. And it was enlightening to see that there is at least one successful model at there who refuses to model lingerie and clothes that flaunt her body. I'd recommend this book for young women and parents of young women, but if you don't fit that demographic, not sure it's really that useful of a book. 4 stars.
Fashioned by Faith By Rachel Lee Carter is a great book for teen girls. It's written by a former model and features opinions about modesty from teen boys. There's also a Bible study guide at the end of the book. Rachel Lee Carter teaches young (or even older) females how to dress modest, what guys think of modest girls and what God says about modesty in the Bible.
Each chapter has a boy with his picture, age, interests, location, etc. There's an opinion piece from the boy on modesty means to him. Rachel Lee Carter then offers her advice on the subject. At the end of the chapter there are questions for the reader to answer.
The book focuses on mending the heart, creating beauty from the inside out. It's not a "dress modest, because I said so" kind of tale. It works on building self esteem and other positive qualities that young girls need.
I love the picture examples in the book. There are images of Rachel Lee Carter from past photo shoots. Girls can visually get ideas on what to wear and see that dressing modest doesn't mean being frumpy.
Being modest is not about being boring and unfashionable; in fact, it often takes more cleverness and skill to be fashionable while still maintaining respect and integrity. The author of this book would know-- she's a professional model.
If you are a teenage girl who is into expressing your personal style, fashion, and clothes, but don't know how to reconcile that with what it says in the Bible about modesty and beauty, then this is a good book to explore. Thumbs up. (=
(And I have a copy, so if you want to borrow it, feel free to ask!)
Rachel really gets into detail about the fashion world, how degrading the media can be, and how young girls feel pressured to dress inappropriately in order to impress boys without realizing that they are disrespecting themselves and sending out the wrong message. Rachel also gives examples about her modeling career and her past. This book made me realize that dressing immodestly really does bring out the wrong attention, and that guys will like you for your personality the best especially the good guys.
I really enjoyed this book. I was afraid that at first it would be like alot of other Christian modesty books but it was soo good! I really enjoyed hearing from Rachel's perspective of modesty and how she loves the modelling and fashion world. I encourage people to read it. It was worth it
Rachel Lee Carter provides an excellent Biblical framework for understanding modesty and virtue. She applies these principles, not rules, to the world of fashion and the appeal contemporary fashion holds. I am in 95-98% agreement with all that she says, but the principles are great.
I'm humbled and excited to help teach the teen girls at our church about modesty this spring! This book contains our study guide. It is written by a christian super model, and also has teenage boys share their thoughts on female modesty. A great read for all women, not just teens!
I liked the points the author made about fashion, dressing modestly, and how she shared experiences from her modeling career, but the format of this book didn't work for me. I felt like I was reading a magazine rather than an actual novel.
This book is a good read for teen girls or parents of teen girls. It does a good job encouraging modesty and sharing teen boy perspectives on female fashion.
