Wonderfully honest look back at Rodney King riots in L.A. plus so much more from a man who served the city as a top cop for a lifetime. Bob Vernon is stand-up guy I had the pleasure of meeting a few months ago at one of his speaking engagements. At last, someone we can look up to and respect as a public official, family man, and Christian.

Hard to say what I think, it was interesting reading a US book on riots, by the Assistant Chief of Police in the LAPD. There were areas of the book where I thought this guy does not really understand. Having said that his argument concerning those who propound equality only want equality if you agree with them. This in life I find to be true. In the UK we are suffering from 'platforming' i.e. we believe in free speech if you say what we agree with. There are lots of people who I do not agree with but I want them to be able to have their say, Vernon is complaining that those courtesies are not extended to all. So maybe he is right on many issues, though maybe he also need to find good ways of expressing his own views.

30 years after its publication, the principles in this book continue to go unheeded, and the destruction we see in California is laughably predictable.

I thought this book would be better that it was. I was hoping for an in depth look at the Rodney King riots, but it was not as in depth as I wanted. There was a lot of "preaching" in the book. I hope life is not a bleak as Chief Vernon believes it is.
