I entered this first reads giveaway as the summary of the book interested me. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that I won a copy! It was an interesting read and feel like I learned a few things and have a better understanding. I would be very interested to read the author's first book.

I won this book through the Goodreads book giveaway. I have started and stopped this book since I received it and just cannot get into it. Certain words seem to be overused and it reads like a textbook. I'm not giving up though. I will plug away and get through it and give a more thorough review.

After a few decades as an academic, teaching and writing non-fiction, I am turning my attention to writing historical fiction set in late Ming dynasty China.

The first four novellas in my Kaifeng Chronicles series, 18 Cranes, Mandarin Ducks, Grand Canal, and Silver Pheasant have been published, and the fifth, Learning from Heaven, will be released in the fall of 2019.
