Ann Shoket has been a key architect in shaping the national conversation about and for millennial women. Over the last 15 years, Shoket brought two major young women’s publications to number one across every platform. As Editor-in-Chief of Seventeen from 2007 to 2014, Shoket repositioned the iconic fashion and beauty brand to dominate as the most relevant voice for its 13 million readers. As part of the launch team of CosmoGIRL in 1999, she helped revolutionize teen magazines by talking openly about important emotional issues that weren’t yet addressed by traditional publications.
Shoket has appeared regularly on Good Morning America, Today, The Oprah Winfrey Show, The View, CNN, Access Hollywood, and E! News, and she was a guest judge for four seasons on America’s Next Top Model. Forbes has named her one of the “Most Powerful Fashion Magazine Editors” in the country.
Sometime after 20, I started to buy teen magazines. I had not much interest in them before, but now I found some interesting things in them I had overlooked before. This was a time when there were some quality magazines with quality content around, so I had fun. Some of them still exist, like this book's magazine.
This one is picture into teen fashion circa 2010-2011, but which hasn't dated too badly (at least not yet). The styles are put into six categories (girly, edgy, boho, classic, glam, and indie) which are used in the magazine itself, though it's easy to see that one might form three pairs out of them (at least): girly + boho, glam + edgy, classic + indie. I think this book is mainly useful to help one go beyond basics, to bring more into one's style.
Each category style has: must-have clothes and shoes + outfit ideas using them one ordinary person's use of the style a famous person's use of the style styling tricks runway and street examples and where to shop (including online)
After the styles comes the accessories guide, plus what jeans, swimsuits, and underwear fits each body type.
I think this book is done very well, though you might add something to the types (edgy's use of color is a bit limited, and girly relies much on floweriness, for example) and have some critical eye on this book's enthusiasm (which doesn't go too far on the annoying side though). For a beginner, this is a not a bad choice, even when it slowly becomes less a right-now. :)
Seventeen Ultimate Guide to Style informs readers what the latest fashion is and how to look presentable in a stunning way. Some women in the world have trouble looking fashionable in public. In this book the author gives tips and tricks to help women look their best. Also, the book helps readers to find the right look for their personality. In this book the author gives an amazing bunch of tips and ideas for what accessories to wear. I believe the author wrote this book to help women and girls to feel more confident and comfortable in what they are wearing. From this book I have learned better ways to dress and what to wear for certain occasions. Overall, this book helped me a lot about fashion and I thought it was interesting to read about.
While reading this book I have found thing I like and some that I don't like. One thing that I liked about this book is that it had a lot of interesting pictures. Also, the author does a good job with giving information on what look is best for readers. For example, the book is made up of girly, edgy, boho, classic, glam, and indie, so this will help girls find the perfect style for themselves. In every section, it has a helpful paragraph about who the look is best for and wear you can find these types of clothing. For example, if a reader wants to find clothing that is a little bit more edgy, they can just flip to the section and find a store that carries those clothing. Another reason that this book is great for readers is that there is another book called "Seventeen Ultimate Guide to Beauty" I believe that this helps girls and women to pair fashion with beauty. For example, if a person finds a look in the style guide that she really likes and doesn't know what make-up and nail polish to wear, then she can check the beauty guide and look amazing. A thing that I don't like is that it does not include different sections for different seasons. If this book included a section for each season then it would help readers on what is appropriate and fashionable for the season that is occurring. For example, if a woman or girl is having trouble styling herself correctly, like if a person is wearing summer clothing in the fall that will not look very good. So, if the author added another section for seasons, then girls and women around the world, and all year long will look amazing in each season.
While reading this book I have learned what look and style I like the most. Also, I learned how to accessories and what type of clothing I should wear with jewelry. This book gives me reliable hints for how to look my best. This information is interesting because it is a helpful way to see if I am doing a good job on dressing well. Also, it is interesting because as a teen it shows me what I should be looking like in ten or twenty years if I would like to look presentable. I liked how the author did not repeat herself, in each section, she didn’t write the same information and opinions about the same look. For example, the author did not write about girly clothing in the boho section, even though she could have mixed them up.
I enjoyed the way the author wrote, she wrote with an upbeat personality. Also, I liked how she made her tips and tricks short, but there are many of them around the page. I liked how I could connect to the author through reading the book. This is because she writes as if she is a teenager, so younger people like me could relate to her. The author did not write a huge paragraph that would be boring to most teens, but she kept it short and relatable for teenagers to enjoy her book.
I would recommend this book to 12 year olds and up. I would not recommend it for a younger audience because they most likely are not interested in fashion yet. But, this is a great book for teens that are into accessories and clothing. They should read this because it will give them self confidence if they look good but not putting too much effort into their fashion choices.
The book Seventeen Ultimate Guide to Style by Ann Shocket and the editors of seventeen magazine is there to help teens pick just the right outfits to look as stylish as possible. They see a problem with teens not being to their stylish potential. There is different styles shown in the book so you can look anyway you want to! I like this book because it has limited words but it gives lots of explaining with the pictures. The author writes this story in photos of outfits and pieces of clothing put together. In each style section there is 5 major pieces, 5 outfits, a style icon, and a trendy teen with the certain outfit type. My favorite few pages are about classic style. I feel as if it connects with my type of wardrobe but there is a personal outfit helper for everyone.
A quality that I found interesting was that it spoke so much with so little. In other words, I learned so much with such little text. This book was really good because it moves quick but is still super intriguing to me and most likely other girls. I would highly recommend this book to teen girls that are curious about style, and if you want to read about makeup hair and nails there is a beauty book by the same people! It’s a perfect pair like a Michael Kors tote and Kate Spade bangles. A thing that I don’t like is that it doesn’t include a sporty style section. I find this apparel to be what a wear as well. Without a sporty portion I can’t look my best sporty self. I get why they don’t have it though. This is because they want people to always look at their finest and be ready to meet anyone at any time with the outfit ideas.
During the time of me reading this book I started to learn a lot about what to piece together with what. For example I realized that if you pair a statement necklace with a plain tee or a black dress it adds the perfect pop and wow factor to your outfit. This really helped me because now I know if I am debating to wear a necklace or a bracelet I wear a necklace because it adds a good touch to the outfit.
I can compare this book to The Seventeen Guide To Ultimate Beauty because it is by the same people and has the same feel to it. The book is written in the same format and I found this helpful because I already knew how I liked to read it and what was the most efficient way to read it. I enjoyed both of them equally and recommend both. I like to read about beauty and style so these books were very interesting for me. I also told my friends to read them and they enjoyed them too!
In all this book was a very good find for me and I enjoyed it a ton. After this book I read at least 3 other books just like it. I think the best part was getting to see the best way to style my best outfits. I hope others can enjoy this book too!
Its hard to write a review of a book with no plot but I really enjoyed Seventeen Ultimate Guide to Style. Maybe it's because I'm in the age group it's targeted at, or maybe it's because I just really love the magazine. (I even have a subscription). While this book is perfect for me, it's not going to be for everyone. First off, it would be more for someone into style or someone who wants style ideas. It also would be better for someone around the age of 17.
The styles rage from girly to classic to edgy so everyone should be able to find what their style is. I found out I'm mostly girly BUT I also wear clothes that are in the Glam, Classic, and Boho categories. It was interesting seeing where my style fits.
After each 'style' chapter there was a list of where to shop for that style. This was one of my favorite parts. I found some new stores and saw some of my favorite places to shop (Charlotte Russe and Forever 21). There are so many different outfits through Seventeen Ultimate Guide To Style that I can guarantee you will find something new to tryout.
One thing I wish Seventeen had put into the book, is where each article of clothing is from. They had a list in the back but it's hard to figure out. It would have been so much easier if they just put the store next to each shirt, skirt, etc. Mostly because I want to buy most of the clothes I saw throughout the book. This was the only thing I found flawed in the Ultimate Style Guide. Overall its a fun quick read, that I think everyone around the age of 17 should check out.
This book isn't just for teenagers; a lot of the content isn't age-specific. There are style classifications (e.g. indie, glam, classic, edgy, etc) and how to dress in a particular style, and near the back of the book, names of different types of fashion items are given (e.g. types of sunglasses: aviators, cat eye, wayfarers, etc) which is useful if you want to learn how to identify them or wish to see how they can best be matched with other items. There are many photos and examples of mix-n-match. There's also a "celebrity style example" for each style (e.g. Taylor Swift - girly style; Emma Watson - indie style; Rihanna - glam style, etc) with pictures illustrating how each celebrity embodies that that particular style.
This book is great for finding fashion inspiration, learning the names of different types of fashion items, and learning the general labels of certain style types. The style type labels (e.g. indie, glam, classic, etc) don't really distinguish themselves very distinctly from one another for me, but I suppose as a broad term for describing where your style tendencies lie, they would work.
Whether you think you have a savvy fashion sense or not; go for designer clothes or stick to bargains, Seventeen Ultimate Guide to Style is sure to appeal and will have you inspired in no time. Which style are you? Girly, glam, indie, edgy, boho, or classic? Skim through all these different looks for new ideas on outfits, accessories, trends, and tips on how to alter what you already have in your closet. Not sure how to fit yourself with jeans and swimwear? Pick your body-shape/style and let the guide book find your "perfect look" with its nifty notes on body types. While I do think of myself as fashion conscious, I don't always consider wearing the "latest fad"–I try very hard to find my own style and be up to-date in my own unique way. Everyone who wants to be fashionable or stylish more or less strives to do the same and with guides like this, it will enhance your abilities to pick-out or know what you like and broaden your shopping horizon.
For teenage girls this book is a style guide to paradise. With six different "schools" of style: Girly, Edgy, Boho, Classic, Glam, and Indie, its not hard to see why this book covers all the basics no matter what kind of fashion statement your trying to make. In addition to defining the dress style, clothes, colors, and patterns that go with each of the six "schools," this book also covers the proper accessories (shoes, bags, jewelry, sunglasses and make-up)that go with each style to make the most of the trendy fashions you enjoy. There are even different styles for school, parties, dating, and your everyday weekends. A must have for any teenage girl who wants to make a statement. Many of the fashions are displayed and coordinated using line-ups, models to showcase the fashions shown, and expert opinions to make the most of every style choice. Trending now!
This book was published in 2011…and it would be a great resource for anyone looking to put together late ought early 10s style…As early 2000s and 2010s are already coming back, this book may be helpful for people who didn’t live through it as an adult the first time around!
Mostly picture-based with lots of outfits and celebrity inspo.
Seventeen Ultimate Guide to Style by Ann Shoket, is a book to inform readers about the latest fashion trends and outfits that will make everyone's’ jaw drop when you walk in a room. Even though many people just throw on clothes and continue on with their day, they don’t realize that being stylish and flirty with their clothes is so straightforward and uncomplicated to do. The problem is the fact that people don’t know how to dress, this book is a guide that will help you dress to success! The author will help by giving step by step information, so you can change your outfits, just like I did. This book is divided up into 6 sections so you can identify the perfect type of style for you. The styles are girly, edgy, boho, classic, glam, and lastly indie. Not only will you be informed about those fascinating styles, but also it will show you how to find your unique style and rock it! My opinion on the book, was that it was well written and can even teach people with style disasters how to fix themselves up and get back on track to being dressed like a queen. Now my outfits are ready to hit the runway showing off my color coordinated, captivating outfits to Marc Jacobs, and Michael Kors. In addition to teaching me style, this book was intriguing and informative simultaneously. The authors style of writing contributes to this fun and flirty vibe. For example, Shoket frequently uses pictures instead of words to create an image in the readers mind, this feature intrigued me to read the book because it is teen friendly. Shoket also uses arrows and captions to point out the details in models outfits, therefore the reader can tell which parts of the outfit is the most stylish. This will help the reader include parts of the outfit in the book in their own outfit. This book has many pros and cons that can affect the readers opinion greatly. Some pros the book includes is that it can relate to everyone’s style because it has so many sections. Another example in favor of the book is that it has little words, but the words are picked precisely to leave the reader with just enough information about the trendiest fashions. Some disadvantages of the non fiction book includes the fact that fashion trends change every day. For example, one day clogs can be “in” and the next day they are “out”. If someone wears a type of clothing not “in”, they will most likely be looked at with a nasty expression. This means that fashion styles are changing everyday and since this book was published in 2011 the styles are a tad bit out of date. Another con is that a couple of sections were not included, for instance the sporty look and a section to always look your best even in the worst circumstances. Due to the fact that this book is astonishing I couldn't resist reading a book similar by the same author, but instead on the topics of makeup, hair, nails, and skin. In comparison both books had the same format and style of writing, but the content was different. The author still include an abundance of pictures for the reader and explained techniques of doing various things that pertain to beauty. This recent learning has acquired me to expand my learning about snazzy outfits. For example a few facts about style acquired is, to make a casual look, look a little bit more dolled up add a pair of heels. A few other pieces of information is that outfits always need an accessory, and don’t be afraid to have risks with fashion, no one ever knows the outcome, it could be good! Overall this book was extremely informative and the content included a lot of tips to assist in having taste in fashion just like superstars do. Shoket did a fabulous job including all of the details about fashion, it helped to get a grasp and understand the book completely. This book is a must read for every girly girl. Due to the fact that I enjoyed Shoket’s work so much, I would rate this book a 5 out of 5 stars. Although I would rate this book a 5 out of 5, there is a specific audience and age group that should read this book. For example girls from the age of 10 to 15 should read this book. This specific age group is suggested to read this book because kids the age younger than 10 usually do not have a great understanding of fashion, and teens older than 15 will probably bored with this book. This is due to the fact that it will be too easy for them. This book is a must read for these people because it teaches fashion and beauty to the people that really need it. This is an amazing book that everyone should add to their currently reading shelf or want to read shelf.
I really enjoyed flipping through this book for style inspirations. I liked that it provided options for several different styles and I found that I like outfits from every one! The only thing that I didn't like about this book was that I feel it could have included even more distinct styles and/or more outfit suggestions. Also, I feel some of the outfits were a little unrealistic to wear out in public, when most girls I know just wear sweatpants to school. But maybe I'm asking a little too much out a simple style book. Really, though, I did enjoy this book and it's great for getting fashion inspiration.
I bought this book on a local book fair.. I thought it was great buy! This book shows you six fashion vibes which is : Girly, Edgy, Boho, Classic, Glam and Indie to suits your own personality. Basically I think this book is suitable for teenagers who are just starting to experiment with their looks. Inside also include some well known brand for each look to make shopping easier.
This book was an amazing guide. Seventeen never fails to come out with good go-to guides that are use-able to say the least. They don't tend to go against bigger body types, such as myself, which I like. They have ideas and styles for every girl of every shape. This book was filled with a lot of tips, from girly to rocker.
Many thanks to Mariah H for reading adn reviewing this book for PSLA!
An excellent source for types of styles: girly, edgy, boho, classic, glam, and indie including accessories such as shoes, bags, jeans and swimsuits. This is a good source for any teen girl who wants to upgrade her personal style and fun for fashionistas like myself. Mariah H, Abington Senior High
i thought the book provided some great opinions and ideas on style that were appropriate to the age groups. I really loved the celebrity inspiration especially the emma watson page. It pretty much summed up teenage fashion into one book and provided help and ideas for anyone from rookie style to xtreme fashionista.
This book is great for people who love fashion boy or girl it doesn't matter. It gives different fashion styles for people looking to learn more about fashion and style.plus it offers exclusive places were you can find these different types of styles. So if you really have an passion for fashion no matter who you are or what you do you will enjoy seventeen ultimate guide to style !!!
Great book, with lots of great fashion tips & ideas for every girl out there! Whether your style is girly, boho, indie, edgy or glam this book is a fun & creative read! Skim it or read it back to back in one sitting for some cool ideas for the next time you hit the mall. :)
This book is great, it gives you all the pieces that you need to have in your closet for every style, plus picture!! I love that, the only but is, I think it is more for high school students and not so much for people that are more grown up, I mean, it says Seventeen!!
Really great book, though the title might be a bit misleading. A better fit would be something regarding your personal type of style, because it focuses more on different styles and their accompanying closets than on basic fashion.
My love for Seventeen magazine motivated me to read this. It has tips to identify your style, recommended stores, and finding the appropriate accessories, underwear, bathing suits and tips to rock your look.
So cool! Lots of advice for new hip fashion ideas. A great book to continually look through for ideas. I would recommend this to any teen wanting some fashion advice.
