Mind blowing! A surprisingly fun, albeit technically deep, read about the mechanisms of consciousness particularly focused on the nature of visual processing. The author uses a quantitative perceptual modeling approach to reveal the computational principles that are involved in visual perception. Along the way the author addresses topics such as realism, functionalism, visual illusions, the homunculus problem, philosophical zombies, analogical and discrete computation, etc.

Not your average Cog-sci book. Gestalt is often mentioned in psychology, but rarely given it's due. It wasn't just a few optical illusions, but a deeply revolutionary theory, where things progress according to the mores of the wholes, rather than the parts. That is, we cannot build up a working model of the psyche/world by breaking it down into small pieces, as science is wont to do.
