Robin T. Popp grew up watching Star Trek and reading Nancy Drew, Robert Heinlein, Sharon Green and Piers Anthony. She loved the daring and romantic exploits of heroic characters on grand adventures in otherworldly places. It wasn’t long before she wanted to write such tales to share with others. Though she was forced to take a thirty-year detour through the real world – which certainly wasn’t without its share of adventures – armed now with two masters degrees, a fulltime job and a family, she has taken the first steps toward realizing her original dream of becoming an author. Too Close to the Sun, a futuristic romance published in July 2003, was her first novel. Out of the Night is her second novel and represents her first foray into another of her favorite alternate realities – the realm of vampires. Robin lives southwest of Houston, Texas with her husband, three kids, three dogs, two frogs, one rabbit and a mortgage. She is living the American dream.
What an interestingly different spin on vampires. I found it intreguing, and couldn't resist turning the pages. Dr Bethany is a delicate looking female, with a strength that overtakes her looks by miles. Her work always keeps her ton the edge of danger, but her lates project has a seriously perpencity for a lot more life threatening danger. Dirk is a changeling who hunts renegade vampires, his job to take them down. He meets Bethany, and realises that there is something much more terrifying than she knows coming for her. As the danger escalates, Bethany has to give in to her hunger to feed Dirks, in the hopes they can save each other. Very much a must read, you won't be able to resist.
There were some miscommunications between the two leads that often led to arguments and rifts between them, and it was usually due to Dirk's past childhood hurts and mistrust of Bethany. I wished Dirk would have asked questions of Bethany, allowed her to explain herself and listened instead of jumping to conclusions all the time. It really annoyed me whenever they'd have senseless arguments. Still, his actions proved how much he cared for her and in the end, everything worked out beautifully. The chemistry between the two leads was palpable and I loved all the supernatural aspects of the book. Also, I think the author's take on vampires was new and interesting. It was a nice, action-packed book; I've reread it twice already and I'd definitely read it again for the third time.
This is usually the type of book that I love, but there were way too many problems with the hero and heroine despite having all the plot elements that I tend to love. Leading lady, Bethany, is extremely wishy-washy in the beginning and I really didn't need her to keep pointing out that she was engaged to someone else every 10 pages. She also forgives the hero for some pretty awful things way too easily for my tastes. Which leads me to our leading man, Dirk. I'm all for leading man alphas with a troubled past, but that's no excuse for bein a total a$$ to Bethany and never actually apologizing for the things he says and the way he treats her. The world is intriguing and has a very original twist on vampires, but the characterization leaves a lot to be desired.
Seduced by the Night is the second book in Robin T. Popp's Night Slayer series. Bethany Stavinoski is a biochemist and has recently been awarded for her brilliance in her leading research. Unfortunately for Bethany, it has made her the target of a group of men looking to create a new drug. These men are strange and mysterious but Bethany is lucky to have a protector in Dirk Adams a former military man who has a few secrets up his sleeves. Bethany is engaged to another man, but that doesn't extinguish the flames that burn between Bethany and Dirk.
I really enjoyed the first book in the series Out of the Night, which I rated an A. But unfortunately I didn't enjoy Seduced by the Night quite as much. One of the things I really enjoyed about OOTN is the unusual twist to the vampire legend. I thought it was rather clever and different from most vampire books, but by the second book that novelty had worn off and nothing new in terms of the legend had come to light, although there were new characters and motivations that surfaced in this book.
The other thing that bothered me with this book was that Bethany was engaged to another man and while she didn't feel passionate toward him she still was committed to him and it took away from her relationship development with Dirk. Dirk was kind of a Neanderthal with Bethany at times and of course hated the fact she belonged to another. I just couldn't really get into this one. Robin T. Popp's writing style reminds me of Elizabeth Jennings or Lisa Marie Rice, where the heroines are very feminine and the males are extremely protective, which is not a bad combination, it just didn't work for me in Seduced by the Night.
Pros: The main character is a great alpha Cons: The concept of how the vampires were made although original was a little ridiculous
I was a little let down with this one. I’ve heard good things about this author from some of my friends but this book for me at least was a little bland. I liked both of the male characters and the romance was good but I just couldn’t get past the idea that the whole series is founded on. That vampires are originally from a Chupacabra (hope I’m spelling that right) bite. The cast of mail characters whole purpose is tracking down the scientists / soldiers and Chupacabra that attacked everyone and turned the people into vampires while at the same time battling their own realization that they are also infected (but only halfway b/c they didn’t die and rise again????) and falling in love with the other character.
In short I liked the basic storyline – genetic researcher (who is engaged to a multi millionare) get dragged into all this and she falls in love with our main character (alpha male ex soldier) and is forced to choose. But the author lost me on the whole Chupacabra thing. Overall I’m not sure If Ill read any of the other books in this series or not.
Dirk Adams is a changeling, he has some of the abilities and powers of vampires but is still human. He tries to defeat vampires and protect humanity along with others in his group. Bethany Stavinoski is a top biochemist and is doing research on a project that has gone from mundane to dangerous. Not due to the chemicals involved but due to people chasing her. She's engaged to the owner of the business but there appears to be something missing. When Dirk rescues her, neither of them really want to be in a relationship but the two of them end up questioning some of their assumptions. I did like Bethany, she's a strong character and comes across often as being the distracted scientist. There's nothing deep in it but it's fun.
