And Love Came Calling

Rate this book
The magic of the Old West comes alive in this timeless tale of love between women. When Kenny Smith (Kendra Nelson), the handsome stagecoach driver, saunters down the dusty main street of Jackson with spurs jangling, all the dance hall girls swoon. Little does Kenny dream that her life is about to take a detour. After Kenny is shot during a holdup, then framed, she is desperate to escape the pursing posse. It is Sophie McLaren, a young, cool-headed widow living in a line shack, who nurses Kenny back to health and hides her from the law. When danger lights the fires of passion between these two women, their fates become entwined. And as they dare to dream of a different life, they learn that love overcomes all obstacles.

I liked this book a lot, in terms of plot it was well managed, if not very surprising, and it kept me reading right till the end. It was well presented, and had a lot of period details that fitted in perfectly.

I found the switching perspective tiresome, as it forced me to re-live parts of the novel, but it was nice to have both characters points of view.

Parts of the plot, like the misunderstanding over who was in cahoots with the robbers, and their sudden seperation, felt rather contrived, and I didn't feel that either character understood or apreciated the gravity of their discovery, that they were at least bisexual - in a time when they might not even have heard of the concept of homosexuality.

Overall, an enjoyable story, with a few issues.

Low 3. This might be because I had to read it as a pdf on the iPad which isn't as nice to read from. It was the typical 'boy' meets girl, with the requisite gunshot to the shoulder that needs tending. Although this time the 'boy' has to wear a dress to town to prove their innocence, which doesn't seem to have gotten them anywhere. It's probably not worthy of a reread.
