Grandpa came to visit us and he missed working on his farm. When Anna and Grandpa woke up. There
there was snow everywhere. Anna wanted to go to school, because she wanted to win the spelling contest. Grandpa told Anna that he could take her to school. Anna and Grandpa struggled through the snow and Anna was worried they'd get lost. But Grandpa told her he'd been in worse storms and he could get them to her school. They got on the elevated train and no one was there to buy a ticket, so they crawled under the gate. Soon the train came and they got on. It was cold on the train, but they were okay. They met some men and women on the train. Grandpa liked to talk to strangers and Anna didn't like that, but they were friendly. The train stopped and they were stuck. The train became real cold and Anna started a game of Simon Says, to warm everyone up. They had fun and they did warm up. The firemen came to help them down a tall ladder. It was scary because the wind was very strong, everyone was afraid to climb down the ladder. The fireman helped everyone climb down. Guess who was the first person to go down. Read the book and find out who was the brave one.

This was a fast read, but it was pretty plotless and set in 1888 without any explanation of some of the things that were different back then (ex: horses being part of the fire brigade). I think it might be a little dense and boring for today's young readers.

I like Anna, Grandpa, and the Big Storm because I like learning about things that happened a long time ago like the ginormous storm.

Anna isn't too excited about her grandpa coming to stay with them. The a big snow storm comes and grandpa offers to take Anna out to town. They walked around the empty town and took the train until it got stuck. Stranded in the train car, they make friends with the other passengers to pass the time. The passengers are then rescued by the firemen and they all walk back to town together in the storm.

This story was based on actual event from 1888 and includes real pictures in the back. This book would be good to use for "small moments".

I read this to the kids. It is another really short chapter book. A fun way to introduce them to historical fiction.

Catherine felt like the grandpa was always mad, except at the end, so she didn’t enjoy it as much as she’d hoped. She liked that it was an unexpected adventure.
