Polish Classic Recipes

Rate this book
Hospitality and hearty food are the hallmarks of the Polish dining experience. This classic and concise cookbook features dozens of favorite Polish dishes showcasing a variety of flavors, preparation techniques, and ingredient selections. With titles given in both Polish and English, recipes range from cucumber salad and beet soup to pork cutlets and potato pancakes. A chapter devoted to pierogi presents the dumplings with an assortment of fillings, and the final chapter of sweets tops off any meal in true Polish fashion. Like all the books in Pelican's Classic Recipe Series, the entries in this collection were carefully selected to provide a cross section of memorable and authentic dishes. Organized by course, the offerings range from appetizers and salads to sides and sweets, featuring the most iconic and national of dishes--Hunter's Stew and Barszcz--alongside simple comfort food and a handful of desserts, including honey cake, poppy seed rolls, and chocolate mazurka.
Designed for the modern kitchen yet retaining traditional roots, each heritage recipe has been tested to perfection. Accompanied by notes on Polish holiday customs, history, and menu pairing suggestions, these dishes offer a flavorful sample of the Polish dining experience, as passed down from generation to generation.

I'm excited to try some of these classic dishes! I grew up with a lot of these dishes so it's nice I stumbled upon this book so I can learn how to make them and not pester my family about the recipes. Has some nice photographs too.

Recently my boyfriend and I went to the Polish Festival in the Capital Region of Upstate New York. I had previously bought their dessert book on the first night, so when I went back the second night I made sure to get a copy of this book which is the authors' first cookbook. This book has even more memories and recipes for all sorts of occasions and they are organized as follows: Appetizers and Salads, Soups and Garnishes, Entrees and Side Dishes, a whole section on Pierogis, and finally a small section on desserts. I definitely recommend getting this book for the pierogi recipes alone, but it has a lot of classic recipes that were passed down from generation to generation, so if you enjoy Polish cuisine or know someone who does, than this may be the book for you.

Some of my best childhood memories are of sitting in my ciotka’s kitchen while she made pierogi and kielasa z kapusta, but long ago I stopped caring about these traditional Polish foods. However, the same day I received this book in the mail, and I read it cover to cover, and the memories and smells and tastes flooded me all at once. I especially loved the authors’ stories about the history of each food and the family that helped them create each recipe. I've only made one of the recipes so far, but it was surprisingly easy and turned out well.
