Through the eyes of a distinctly non-athletic protagonist--a fat high school journalist named Mitch--veteran sports novelist Deuker reveals the surprising truth behind a mysterious football player named Angel. When Angel shows up Lincoln High, he seems to have no past--or at least not one he is willing to discuss. Though Mitch gets a glimpse of Angel's incredible talent of ...more

A lot of boys are reluctant readers, tough nuts to crack for parents and teachers who want their kids to read more. Many of these boys are into sports, too -- some merely as fans, and others as actual players. If you know a kid like this and you don't know about Carl Deuker, you should familiarize yourself with Deuker's growing work. He's good at what he does, and what he does is chiefly sports, often with a secondary plot that goes beyond sports.

PAYBACK TIME follows the familiar Deuker formula.

the book finally picked up and the reporter got his huge story but the story was way different than what he expected and the book took a turn and i liked it.

A silly idea of reading a library selection at random brought me to Payback Time. Let me say, this is not a book I would gravitate towards, especially in regards to the heavy sport involvement, but the main character, Mitch, and his fearless antics as a high school reporter had me oddly hooked.

Mitch and his partner, Kimi, are a duo that I loved. While tasked together to report and photograph for the sports section, they notice a mysterious player, Angel, and slowly begin to piece together a pot

This story is about Mitch, a young high school journalist. He hopes that one day he will be a journalist that will uncover some large, life altering news story, such as maybe Watergate or something similar. His high school, Lincoln High School, has a school paper, which Mitch wanted to be the editor of. Mitch was sadly disappointed when they gave him the sports column. He is disappointed because he liked sports but being overweight he often was picked on and never participated in the sports, and ...more

I really liked this book because it really got me at the edge of my seat. This book was really good because it kept me guessing different scenarios to what will eventually happen. I could never have guessed what happened at the end. Mitch true will do whatever it takes to get a good story. I really enjoyed reading this book because in the book was about this 17 year old kid who is a reporter in his school and he is about to unravel the intense past of a kid from Philidelphia. The 17 year old Mit ...more

This might be the first sports book I've ever read. Even if you know nothing about football, like me, the sports scenes are great. My one big complaint about the book is the cliche that the author used about the kids with purple hair and tattoos being the druggie kids. Does this guy really think that any kid who feels like dying their hair a bright color is a drug user? Lame. Other than that major annoyance, it was a fun mystery with a great main character.

In this book, a high school journalist gets put on sports, which he used to play when he was younger. His name is Mitch and he is fat. People make fun of him, and call him names all the time. He doesn't want to be sports but the new president of the newspaper makes him. He then just does the best can, and a new player comes to the team. He is a superstar, but very suspicious. Mitch works and follows and tracks him down to find out the truth. It really is a big shocker and I'll let you figure tha ...more

I really liked this book. It was fun to read because it's a sports book and I like to read about sports. Daniel True is the main character. He is a journalist for his school's newspaper. However, his school doesn't have a lot to write about. So, when a new kid, Angel Marichal, shows up and is the best football player his Seattle school's ever had, he jumps right in to investigate. What he finds out, shocks him and his school.
I'll stop there because there's a surprise ending, and I'd HATE to ruin

Have you ever read a story that involves a kid that's a beast and moved all the way across the country to play football? A reporter for the school's newspaper has to follow all the sports and finds this kid that is a beast and is sitting on the bench. He starts looking into the mysterious thing and tries to find out why hes sitting on the bench when the starter is smaller and not as good as he is. I enjoyed this book because it involves sports and has an adventure.

Strong play-by-play description for football fans. Also a good theme as to why you should not stick your nose into other people's business.

Lights flashing, crowd screaming, It’s third down a close game. This is about a kid who is a person who interviews the player after the games. The book is Payback Time, the author is Carl Deuker. So far I would give the book a four star rating because at some points it can get a little slow at times. But sometimes it will get you sitting on the edge of your chair and have a little mystery. I also like how the book has a little bit of romance.
The one bad thing when Mitch-the main character- is

Carl Deuker’s book, Payback Time, the only book in its series, is about a teenager named Daniel True or Mitch, who has the dream to be a big reporter. Ever since Mitch was little, he has had the dream to be a reporter. Even though he needs to start out low at being a school reporter, he’s in love with that. Everyone knows every reporter has at least one big story and Mitch thinks he has his hands on his when a new kid named Angel Marichal comes to their high school. Angel is a very shadowy guy ...more

Personal Response
To me this was a really interesting book. It was very interesting to see how a reporter do their jobs. The one thing i enjoyed was how much excitement was in this book. It was interesting to hear all about college football through a reporter's eyes.

Plot
A boy named Mitch is a sophomore at lincoln college. He's waiting for the results of whos the head reporter. The names are called and his name was for sports. Mitch knows nothing about sports, but that's about to

Book Review of Carl Deuker’s Payback time
In Payback time, the story tells about a teenager at a high school named Mitch and he is a reporter and writer for the school newspaper. There is a new kid who joins the football team that goes by “Angel“. There is no background information about this new kid. Mitch sees him acting odd in school and not wanting to be recognized by anyone. The coach also gives him different numbers for his jersey so people don't know who he is. Anger has great talent on t

PERSONAL RESPONSE:
I liked the book Payback Time by Carl Deuker, because I related to this book by me playing football. I thought this book was great. I felt like I was there watching the games.

PLOT:
In the book Payback Time they were picking people for a school paper. Mitch got the job of the reporter for the sports section which he thought he would not like, because he wanted the editor position. He went to the football coach, and the coach only wanted the quarterback to be interviewed. The coa

I never would have guessed that I'd like this book.

Yeah, it's got a lot of football in it, but it's also a mystery, and surprisingly clean (I'm sorry, but no gang member is going to yell "I'm gonna beat the crap out of you!", but I appreciate the gesture nonetheless).

I was charmed by Mitch, too. I'm not sure I've encountered a high school male protag with quite the same personality.

Anyway, pretty nice.

The book “Payback Time” by Carl Deuker is an ok book. Senior Daniel True is short, pale and overweight. His nickname is the Michelin Man, or Mitch for short. Mitch wants to be an investigative reporter but, for now, he’s stuck covering sports for the school newspaper. In true investigative style, Mitch wants to dig deeper into the mysterious Angel, an older-looking transfer student with “NFL skills” whom football Coach McNulty is hiding on the bench until key moments of play. Coach changes Angel ...more

Payback Time is a mystery thriller. It tells the story of a high school sports writer and a photographer who wants to write an exclusive story.
I would recommend this book for 6th graders through college. If you are a football fan this will be the book for you; it will keep you intrigued throughout the entire mystery. If you are not the biggest football fan the mystery part of the story will keep you interested.
This book deserves a solid 4.5. This book really expresses how coaches can respect

This book is about a journalist for Lincoln Lights high school news paper. His name is Daniel True, more likely to be known as Mitch a nickname that was picked up through the years. This was his senior year and in the newspaper he was just switched to the sports column, something he didn't really know much about since he got cut from the football team his freshman year. The first story he was put on was football, because that's what most high school students care about. What's worse than coveri ...more

This book blew me away in my expectations. I was expecting a totally different story from what I got, but that is a good thing! This book will appeal to many readers, not just boys like I thought.

Mitch is a great character. He is motivated and pushes himself when he wants something. When he decides to lose weight, I found myself cheering for him and pushed the bag of chips I was eating away from myself. Kimi is another good character. She is strong, fierce, and goes after what she wants, but sh

What i thought about this book is that this book is awesome!. First the title Payback Time its a catching title, because i thought it was a bout two teams that were rivals and that one team beat the other team and the team that lost wanted Payback. Payback time is a very interesting book. It interested me due to the football play by play, but also the mystery part kept me engaged when the plays couldn't. The story line is really good. It strongly influences the theme, "Don't judge a book by its cover" and I think that's really good for teenage readers. Deuker was on point with his book and his characters were great. I can't wait to read the rest of his sports books. I recommend this book to any football player or mystery seeker. I recommen ...more

Payback Time by Carl Deuker is suspenseful and action packed. The story is about an investigative journalism, but also has lots of play by play football games. A strange transfer student is in the heat of the story. Gang activity and witnessing a murder has put one character in jeopardy. Main characters Mitch and Kimi are put in lots of dangerous situations as a result of their involvement including assault fist fighting threatening phone calls and tire slashing. This is a great read for any spo ...more

This was 3/1/2 for me...I liked the story line behind all the sports stuff but found myself skimming the football scenes. They just seemed so secondary to the actual ploy rather than integral to the story. The idea of a kid getting in shape, coming into his own, and finding that news is not always without consequences was great. I'm not sure if kids seeking out a true sports story will get past the first few pages about an overweight reporter for the school newspaper as the sports stuff doesn't ...more

This book sounded really good from the write up on it. It has a little mystery and intrigue in the high school sport area. I really liked the start of the book and could relate to Mitch (danny). The story gets really good as Mitch and Kimi try to figure out just who Angel is and where he came from.

The story at the end just falls flat and ends very abruptly. It finishes so fast that you feel like you missed alot about what exactly happened and you want to read more about the characters and their
