David Musnick is a sports medicine physician and Mark Pierce is a certified athletic trainer. In 1999's Conditioning for Outdoor Fitness, Musnick and Pierce, along with various other contributors, provide a fairly comprehensive resources of exercises to implement as part of a general fitness routine, as part of a specific outdoor activity training routine, or as part of strategic cross-training to strengthen performance in a different physical activity. Many black and white photos are used to highlight proper form for various exercises, and some exercises are also described at various levels of difficulty to suit the needs of beginners vs. the more advanced. A few chapters are devoted to topics like nutrition, sample training routines, aging, etc., though I didn't find these sufficiently detailed to serve as a one-stop-shop for these elements.

I'm not an athlete but found this book useful for exercise suggestions to implement into my general fitness training program. This book is definitely more advanced and technical than the likes of my most recent fitness read, Weight Training for Dummies (2nd, 00) by Neporent, Liz - Schlosberg, Suzanne Paperback (2000) , so I'd recommend newbies start with a basic resource before progressing to this book which presumes an intermediate level of knowledge of exercise and form.

Excellent book for ideas and ways to increase fitness based on activity. I culled many routines from the pages, all with helpful descriptions including which muscle groups affected, detailed instructions and illustrations.

Written by an MD in sports medicine, this book goes into exercise physiology, aerobic training, strength, balance, stretching, injuries, injury prevention, and specific training for various outdoor activities. Specific chapters go into, hiking, backpacking, rock climbing, mountaineering, kayaking, etc. This is an excellent book that goes beyond traditional exercise books into physiology of excercise, yet it is accessible to the layman.
