This is not a book for the noir fanatic or the academic. It is great for the film buff who wants to know more about this genre. The bulk of the book is devoted to describing the films and you get a lot of Ballinger's personal judgments about their quality and how they fit into this category. There are additional sections on history of both foreign and domestic approaches to noir and special note of significant actors, directors, costumers, etc. Nice photos give you a sense of the movie and help ...more

As with all "top ten" lists, the must-see fifty films noir chosen by these authors are subject to debate (for example, I think Where the Sidewalk Ends should have been on the list instead of DOA but ... yeah!) A fun romp through the genre though.

Although reading The Rough Guide to Film Noir is a trip down memory lane for me, the knowledge and expertise of the authors are somewhat questionable. Sure, it's a chockful of information on many films noirs, but are a great deal of many of them really classified as a film noir?

I can see some noirish traits in many of the films mentioned in the book, but they are no way part of the film noir genre. The film noir era was pretty much ended by the advent of color films. Thereafter, there is a smat
