As some people know, I'm Yasmine Galenorn's assistant, now, so I won't be formally reviewing her books, any longer (same with Dakota Cassidy.) However, one of the side benefits of working for authors is getting ARCs waaayyyy before anyone else does, so I was able to read Bone Magic quite early. I can still offer my personal opinion on the works of the authors I represent, so here, for what it's worth, is my mini-review of Bone Magic.
I can honestly say that Bone Magic will not let you down. Yasmine's book naturally cycle through the three D'Artigo sisters, each set of three within the series feeling like a mini-trilogy to a certain extent. Bone Magic definitely feels like the first in a trilogy; setting up a lot of new plot twists and characters, while resolving a few storylines that readers have been discussing for a while. The action, intrigue and sensuality are all amped up, as Camille takes the stage for the seventh book in the Otherworld Series. I won't give away any surprises or spoilers (of course)but I will say that you're in for one hell of a bumpy, fantastic ride.
My expectations for this series have never been high. All I really expect is a fun, wacktastic, OTT adventure with the D'Artigo sisters and their menagerie. With this book, though, I realize that the fun is over (for me, anyway). It's not that the sexual parts are more graphically detailed than in other books, that's easy enough to skip over if you want to. And it's not that it's a one-note series, that can actually be a benefit for work-week reading since you know you're not going to be tempted to stay up all night finishing it. I think what's really pushed this into do-not-enjoy territory is how often the sisters use self-serving excuses to rationalize away behavior that breaks their own moral codes. (Hello, this is how war criminals are made.) Between that and the going-nowhere plot, I think I'm done with this series.
I am not sure if it was my frame of mind, but there was a lot more frisky filth in this one. I wasn't expecting the graphic sexplorations with Camille and her handful of husbands getting her off. I don't read this series for that element. It isn't that I don't read that genre, but I read this series for the diverse and interesting cast of characters with the adventurous plot line. The insertion of all the intimacy felt a little forced to me and I wasn't looking for that side of this character. I wanted more development of the chaos that they face. That lowered my review. I am sure other readers of this series might be applauding and yelling about time. For me, I wanted more magic and less boning.
Well that didn't take long. Where the hell is my husband? Or one of the three. Camille defiantly doesn't lack in the husband department. Ms. Galenorn seems to suffer from to much recapping! Really I think that you could honestly rip out maybe three pages every time that she re-explains an effing character. Sorry, but I don't suffer from short term memory loss. For my sanity PLEASE STOP REPEATING YOURSELF AUTHORS! Can I just go back on the smut scenes and...
Beasties are the only saving grace for this series. There needs to be more monster attacks and less sucking face!
BLAH! Well I am glad that Trillion is back but WTH? He just shows up? No explanation why he didn't come back sooner or anything like that? He was angry with Camille for getting married to two other men in his absence, with due cause but he was cruel. Smoky's father showed up with Smoky's fiancee, which surprise Camille is jealous about; yet none of her guys care that they all share her??? Anyway beyond that the story is just more of the same. Camille is becoming another Anita Blake, screwing anything and everything, it is boring. Honestly how can you make sex boring? By writing too much of it. The D'Artigo father comes off as an ass, I don't like him. Nothing else much is intriguing. All in all I feel like there are far too many things going on and they are being told by too many different people for the overall theme to make any sense to me. *SIGH* Only a few more to go.
This one felt more like a romance novel to me because the only storyline that resolved was Camille's love life. Everything else was left hanging a bit. I still enjoyed it. My eyes did glaze over a bit when reading the parts that took place in Otherworld, but only because I am really into urban fantasy right now and I didn't want to immerse in a new world. I hope my library gets more of this series in stock!

Seventh in the Otherworld / Sisters of the Moon urban fantasy romance series revolving, literally, amongst three sisters and the family they have accumulated in Seattle. The perspective this time is with Camille.
My Take Mmmm, I like the idea of the d'Artigo sisters' old Victorian being a real home and not just a temporary place where they wait out their exile. They've certainly picked up a number of housemates from Maggie to Iris, the girls' various lovers, a few demons, and a cousin.
Delilah has this problem where the least bit of fright or overwhelming curiosity overcomes her and she automatically shifts into puddy-tat mode. She also leaves her human brain behind. Sometimes it's cute; most of the time it's just irritating.
It's a lot of personal growth for Camille in this one while we learn more about the history of different races in Otherworld. Including who dear old dad is romancing!
Although I don't understand why Camille is whining on about it. She's been training for years in her craft. Surely she understands that this is necessary. Even I can see that it has to be done as part of the cycle. Yeah, I get that it's hard, but, gimme a break, Galenorn, this whining just ain't believable!
Then there's the touching, romantic scene at the end with Camille and her three lovers. I still can't figure out how the mechanics of that one works...
The Story The dead are rising all over town. Partly due to Harold Young and his boy gang's murderous torturing, partly due to the lamia
Then there's Smoky's little problem. Seems he has a very angry fiancée and daddy dearest is here to force the issue. With Smoky forced off to the Northlands, it leaves only Morio and Iris to accompany Camille to Otherworld to meet Trillian and bring him home.
Part of that trip is a visit with her father which leads to a command invitation to Darkynwyrd forest which is ruled by the Raven Mother, an Elemental Lord, and a command sacrifice.
That requirement however pales next to what Camille learns the kings and queens of Otherworld along with the Kerraastar Knights intend to do.
The Characters There are three d'Artigo sisters who have emigrated to our world and they are at the forefront of protecting Earthside from a powerful demon lord.
A Moon Witch, Camille has been practicing death magic with one of her husbands (I suspect part of the reason is to help her get the rest of her magical talents under control), Morio Kuroyama, a youkai-kitsune demon and Rodney, the bone-man golem given to Morio by Grandmother Coyote, is not impressed. He is pretty funny in a gross way. Her other husband is a very possessive silver-white dragon, Smoky, a.k.a., Iampaatar, from the Emperor caste of dragons. Trillian is a third lover, Svartan, and still lost in Otherworld. Camille owns the Indigo Crescent bookstore, but has been leaving the running of it up to Henry Jeffries, a retiree who will do anything to escape his mother.
Delilah is a werekitty/panther/Death Maiden and Chase Johnson, chief of detectives, is one of her boyfriends; Zachary Lyonnesse, a werepuma, is the other.
Menolly is the third and a vampire who runs the Wayfarer Bar & Grill. Nerissa Shale, a werepuma belong to the the Rainier Puma Pride is her female lover. Nerissa is also running for city council as a bisexual Were. Roz has been in Mennolly's bed as well.
Shamas ob Olanda is the girls' full-blooded fae cousin and he has been working for the Earthside police. Sephreh ob Tanu is their father and an adviser to the queen. Aunt Rythwar has helped their father put the house back together after its ransacking. Leethe and Kayla are part of the household staff and Camille is happy to learn they have survived.
Rozurial, an incubus, and Vanzir, a turncoat demon, both live with Shamas in the new studio in back. Iris Kuusi is a Talon-haltija (Finnish house sprite) and a Priestess of Undutar who keeps house and cares for Maggie, their baby calico gargoyle. Vikkommin, a snow sprite, was Iris' fiancé until he was murdered. She is cursed to not bear a child to term until he is avenged. Bruce O'Shea, the leprechaun, has asked her to marry him, but he wants children.
Lethe and Finias are two Otherworld Fae assigned to help out the Faerie Human Crime Scene Investigation team. Queen Asteria is the Elfin Queen the girls delivered the seals to when they could acquire them. Trenyth is her personal assistant. Now she and Tanaquar, the new queen of Y'Elestrial are trying to repair the damages from the war. Grandmother Coyote is one of the Hags of Fate and Morio's grandmother. Feddrah-Dahns is the crown prince of the Dahns Unicorns and his father, King Upala-Dahns, wants to talk to Camille. The Black Unicorn is the father of the Dahns Unicorns and Raven Mother is his lover. The nine Kerraastar Knights, a.k.a., the Knights of the Portals, are humans with the proper energy signature who have touched the heart of the seals: Venus the Moon Child of the Rainier Puma Pride and Tam Lin are two of them. They must all be trained as guardians in Otherworld.
Morgaine is the Queen of Shadow and Dusk and is threatening the girls to forsake Otherworld and join her court. Aeval is the Queen of the Unseelie Court while Tatiana has taken back the Seelie.
Wilbur is a new neighbor and a powerful necromancer. Andy Gambit is a yellow journalist for the Seattle Tattler and has been promoting the Freedom's Angels candidate, Taggart Jones, for city council. Carter is a demon researcher who recently purchased Harold Young's house. Derisa is the High Priestess and emissary of the Moon Mother.
Stacia, a.k.a., the Bonecrusher, is a lamia and a necromancer. She's also the latest in Shadow Wing's generals sent to crush the girls. Shadow Wing is a demon lord determined to acquire the seals that will unlock the gate between Hell and Earthside. Once he has Earthside, it's an easier path to Otherworld. Telazhar is an extremely powerful Fae necromancer and he has trained Stacia. Trytian is the son of a powerful daemon ordered to seek an alliance with the girls.
Hotlips is Smoky's hot gold dragon fiancée with fewer manners than a pig. Then there's his father, Hyto, a white dragon, who is, if possible, even ruder and more vicious.
The Cover The cover is red from the pink-tinged full moon radiating out a star-shape of crackling lightning onto a textured stone wall of reds forming a background for Camille from her red-tinged sable hair to the red vinyl bustier she's wearing, glancing back at us over her shoulder.
I suspect the title was one of those "oh, what the hell" moves. Sure there are bones in this: Young's leavings, the disgusting Rodney, and, at a stretch, the Black Unicorn. But none of them, in my opinion, are strong enough to carry the Bone Magic.
I first read this book December 7-9, 2013. I reread it February 2-4, 2017.
I did not review this book after my first reading of it, so the below review is completely new.
I really enjoyed this book. It was a pretty fantastic story. I'm not sure why I no longer feel like it's a five-star story, but something is holding me back. So this book gets *just* 4.5 "great!" stars from me. ;-)
So much happened in this story, it's hard to know what to talk about. So, in no particular order, I guess I'll just share my thoughts:
Camille is reunited with Trillian in this book!
The ending shared a special moment in the life of Camille and her men: It was glorious. :-)
We didn't see the D'Artigo sisters go after the sixth spirit seal in this book. We did, however, learn about a plan involving all of the spirit seals: I'm not entirely sure what they plan to do, but I worry that nothing good will come from it. Hopefully Camille, et.al., will be able to stop them. (Or help them strengthen their plan so that it will be good.)
We did not get to meet the new demon general Shadow Wing sent Earthside, but we heard from her. She :-( In the final battle, Camille and her sisters and friends didn't actually face the general. Instead, :-(
Earlier, on the same trip into Otherworld to meet Trillian, after Camille, et.al., learned of the plan for the spirit seals, Camille The initial meeting was so. . . I was tied up in knots, knowing what was coming from my status updates, and I cried a bit with Camille when she found out what was expected of her. It was such a poignant scene.
It seems to me that I also chuckled a little (internally?) at an earlier scene, but sadly I did not note it down. Ah well, I'll catch it when I eventually reread this book. ;-)
In the end, Camille's High Priestess from Otherworld paid her a visit. :-)
I think that's it for earth-shattering revelations in this story. Those and
So this story was very suspenseful, very exciting, and chock-full of good stuff. It also had at least four smoking hot sex scenes between Camille and one or another - or all - of her men. :-)
Uh oh. I almost forgot. . . Smoky's father makes an appearance in this story and whoa! He is awful and very scary and, I have the feeling that we haven't seen the last of him.
Oh! And Chase was injured in the final fight. (I really don't understand why he is allowed to go with Camille, et.al., when they're up against bad "guys." It seems pretty stupid of him, to me.) Unfortunately, We didn't find out in this book.
(Honestly, I am hoping to see I'm still holding out hope that someone new will enter the picture and turn out to be the best man for Delilah.)
Okay. I'm pretty sure that that is now "it" for earth-shattering revelations in this book. It's truly a great story. :-)
Some words on the actual ending to this book:
In the final chapter, Camille :-)
After proofreading this review, I realized that I forgot to share any details about the creatures/beings we met in this book. Most were returning characters/beings. I think the only new-to-us beings we met were Tregart demons. Oh! We also met a goshanti devil and a yew tree deva. And then there was the skeleton golem. Also, the demon general is a lamia, but we only heard from her and didn't actually meet her in this book.
I think that's it for new creatures/beings. I am really loving this series for all of the different types of supernatural and mythological creatures and beings we meet. :-)
Oops, forgot one more: We met a goddess in this book! () Also, :-)
Once again, in closing, this is a great story. I really enjoyed it. :-)
In this the 7th installment of this series I am torn between giving this book a 3 or 4 star rating so I went with 3 and I will tell you why.
This one just did not hold my interest, instead of devoring it in a couple of hours I struggled to finish it in one day. Don't get me wrong there are things accomplished the biggest being Trillion comes back. In this book we get to spend time with Camille who is working on perfecting her Death Magic with Morio. We also learn a tiny bit more about Iris' background and a problem comes up with Stormy, which although resolved in part leads to more problems in the end.
Which flows guite nicely into one of my problems with series storylines, somewhere along the line you get to that book that not much gets resolved you just get new problems that drag out into an X number of books in the future. Thats how this felt to me. The one thing finished, end of story line, was that Trillion comes back. Which was good but the way he acted when he got back felt off to me.
Another issue I had was the language, there where times I would be reading and a charecter would start swearing and it felt so false to that charecter the it threw me out of the story. I would have to go back and try to pick up the flow. Now this is a fantasy with elves, fairies and such I just can't see them swearing like a sailor home for leave and it ruined it for me.
The final thing that is not a problem yet but could be for me later is that there are numerous sex scenes with Camille and her men. I like Camille she is outspoken, brash and does not allow anyone to put her down. The feeling I got when reading these scenes was that the author was not trying to show how in love her and her men were but more "lets just prove to you just how kinky and differant we can be" I just don't want this series to end up like another one where the only thing we get is cut and paste sex not true feelings between charecters.
So now you see why I just could not give it 4 stars it was to much of a struggle to stay in the story while reading it and I was not satisfied in the end.
This would probobly be a lot more like 2.5 stars. I like the series, I like the charicters, and I like the love/lust scenes. I just wasn't caring about bonecrusher the bad chick. I wasn't buying it. I kind of felt like i was in a story where the purpose to promote Camille to the next level, bring her trio of men together and imagine great sex, but the mystery, or plot was just something the editor insisted on. Anyway, this is my least favorite so far in the series. But still OK.
I picked up the first of these books way back in high school, and I loved the magic and steamy scenes. They became my guilty pleasure. However, after reading the fourth I was moving and going to university. I finally picked them up again earlier this year and am trying to get through all of them but I'm struggling.
The story is there but the way it's written gave me a hard time immersing myself in the world. There is a lot of repetitive language and a lot of random things that seem to get written in to try to increase the "forboding" or drama that the author is trying to write in.
I can tell that the author was trying to bring in aspects of mundane life, like fashion and food, and relationship "issues" if you can even call them that but there is an overwhelming amount of details that get added that make me turn whole pages without reading them because they are SOOOOOOOO drawn out.
All in all, decent enough series but definitely not one that makes my top hits list like I thought it did back in high school. I guess tastes really do change.
I'm interested in the overarching plot and relationships of thos series. It's appealing in the way that many middle-budget urban fantasy TV shows are. I wish there were less focus, or maybe would really like more nuance, in the romance and sex aspects of this series. Though I'm glad for the polyamorous rep in this series, Camille's books in particular evoke eye-rolling in me because she seems like thinly-veiled Mary Sue with her harem of men prone to violence and possessiveness. Especially with the popularity of 50 Shades of Gray
At first, I found this book to be promising bc the world-building is much more complex than most paranormal romances, however I was soon disappointed. It quickly became very muddled, throwing in new characters, beings, magic concepts, place descriptions and plot points seemingly just for the sake to make it seem more high fantasy and much of it failed to have any relevance or move the plot forward in any way. I found myself skipping over paragraphs, sometimes even entire pages. Then, there was so much happening and so much drama, yet the end was entirely anticlimactic. Lastly, some of the dialogue was way too cringey and unnatural for me This was the first and last book of this series I will read.
I like these books, but I feel like there are too many characters and always more being introduced in these short books. It feels like there’s no resolution by the end of each book. I took a little break but came back because I was curious how the story would resolve. Another book in and I feel no closer to the ultimate resolution. I’ve already picked up the next one from the library, and I will likely start it later today. They are enjoyable, short, easy reads.
One of my favorite series to get lost in. The steamy scenes are there, of course, but the world that has been created is set up in vivid detail with Kota of subplots to loop through all the books. Usually first person POV makes my neck itch, but for this series the rotating perspectives of the sisters in each book helps to keep the story moving.
Good for Camille, she is really getting a handle on her magic. I hate that most of the male characters are such assholes ( Seriously the only guy in her that isn't a fucking jerk is Morio). It really sucks that when things get really bad the first one to catch hell is Camille. She isn't my favorite character but damn when will she catch a break.

POV of the oldest D'Artigo sister Camille. She is by far my favorite of the sisters. She finally got her third man back, but the tides are turning. People she once thought were on her side may no longer be. She has far more responsibilities than she ever thought she would have. All and all, one of my favorites so far
Narrated by Cassandrea Campbell. A lot of sex while the group tries to find and thwart the latest demon general. Camille has dragon trouble, demon trouble as well as big changes for her and her friends. Lots love messages and steamy sex with her men, as well as loss as the battle heats up.

Henry deserved to have a life after getting away from under his vindictive mother's thumb. Instead he was assassinated and became a martyr for a cause he was not involved in. Although Henry is a fictional character I cry with Cau7mille when he did die from complications from his injuries.

Giving 2 stars only because the main storyline is keeping me interested. I want to know if they defeat Shadowing!!! Otherwise, these books are 0 stars! Very juvenile writing. Too much gratuitous sex. And this is coming from someone that usually says, 'This book needed more sex!'
5/5 ⭐ So I usually don't like Camille's books as much as the other two sisters, but this one kinda redeemed that. It was cool seeing the Hunt and the Moon Mother.
