Using blog entries and responses, authors Brian Kirk and Jacob Thorne invite readers into a conversational, engaging, and compelling discussion about why program-based, entertainment-focused ministries fail to develop young people into life-long participants in the mission of the church. Overall, "Missional Youth Ministry" is a good resource, particularly for new youth leaders or those who have found themselves stuck. As I read it, I recognized that my own youth would have been able to write it themselves! With this said, it reveals that the authors have a strong sense of what youth are wanting and needing.
The only point of contention I had with this read is that I think I have a slightly different understanding of what the term "disciple" means. Although I would agree that fol

I thought the book was exactly what two stars means, "ok." I found the introduction and opening couple of chapters compelling. The writers drove home the point that ministries should not be based on a consumeristic western culture but they that should be missional, advancing the Kingdom of God. Instead of focusing on carefully planned activities, youth ministries should be focused on carefully planned ministry. The distinction is important. The authors urge youth workers to focus more on spiritu ...more

It's hard to find youth ministry books written from the perspective of mainline or progressive churches. Too many texts out there are written either for evangelicals or for academics. This book is both practical but also has sound theology behind it. The format mixes blog entries from the authors' website with additional material that argues that we need to stop focusing on programs and numbers in youth ministry and focus instead of helping teens think seriously about their part in the mission o ...more

Written by guys in mainline, theologically-liberal leaning churches, this book provided some good practical ideas for ministry, but ultimately failed give a biblical understanding of mission and thus what a missional ministry should be about. The authors point to a few stories of Jesus, but don't see the Word of God as the basis for all ministry.

In short, I would not recommend this to anyone who is looking to lead a youth ministry to be more Christ-exalting and gospel-centered.

Missional YM was okay, but I don't think they ever really defined what they meant by Missional. While the opening few chapters were interested and those that followed had some practical tips and advice, nothing really made this book stand out among other Youth Ministry books.
