William K. Durr

Dr. William Kirtley Durr was an educator, author, and expert literacy.

Durr joined the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1943 and became a fighter pilot, flying between Iwo Jima and Japan. He then became an Army Information Education Officer. In 1946 he left the Air Force in to attend the University of Kentucky, then transferred to Butler University, where he received his B.A. in Elementary Education in 1949. He began teaching third grade in Indianapolis. In 1951 he received his M.A. in Elementary School Administration from Butler University. He became Elementary Superintendent of Schools for St. Joseph, Illinois, and began his Ph.D. at the University of Illinois, which he completed in 1955. He joined the faculty of Michigan State University. In addition to teaching literacy, he was the senior author of the Houghton Mifflin Reading Program books.

Durr retired in 1981.
