Taking Chase is the second book in Lauren Dane's Chase Brothers series and it's older brother Shane's story.
Shane was introduced in Giving Chase, where he pretty much acted like a jerk and failed to endear himself to me, but I knew he would have to change in this book if Ms. Dane had any intention of making him a likable hero. What I didn't expect to see was how abrupt his change was, so it was hard to believe it at first. Right from the start of this book, previously callous and relationship-shy Shane was turned into a gentle and caring man who never hesitated to pursue a serious relationship with Cassie. Huh? Where was the guy who was so afraid of being cheated again that he avoided getting emotionally involved with any woman who might endanger his heart? I know that romantic heroes are supposed to reform when they meet "the one", but there's usually some degree of inner struggle before they take the fall. This didn't happen with Shane, and I was disappointed because I had been wondering how the mighty would fall since I finished Giving Chase. Anyway, once I decided to "accept" Shane's new demeanor without trying to understand it, it was easy to fall in love with him and wish him the best luck in his pursuit of Cassie's love.
Cassie was a difficult heroine to me. I really liked her at first and I completely understood where she was coming from, but she grated on my nerves with her OTT attitude when it came to refusing any help, which she saw as "managing", in her life. Come on, Shane was not only her boyfriend but he was also a cop, and only a stupid woman would refuse his help! She also annoyed me with the way she kept comparing Shane's actions with her ex's. Yes, she did that all the time, and no matter how many times she said she wasn't doing it, her actions said otherwise. Okay, Shane had issues too and dumped them on her now and then, so their relationship was bound to have some bumps along the way. But why was he the one who always made the effort to patch it up? He took the blame for everything, and I didn't think that was right.
As for the plot, the romance was slow paced - as it should be, considering Cassie's history - and sweet, but there were some jarring "holes" in Cassie's plan to build herself a completely new identity and escape her ex-husband's pursuit. Her being in constant contact with her brother was an extremely easy way for her ex to track her down, and I was actually surprised to see how long it took until her crazy ex finally caught up with her. Maybe I've read too many romantic suspense novels and I've become too jaded to believe that "normal" people on the run do make mistakes like that, but Cassie and her brother weren't acting on their own and had the assistance of people who were - or should have been - experts on the subject.
As it happened before, Ms. Dane's writing wasn't exactly to my liking. I still can't put my finger on it, but I found myself skimming through some scenes involving a secondary character, as I felt that they didn't add much to the story. Regardless, reading this book wasn't a hardship at all, as Shane and Cassie were engaging characters and I was really rooting for their HEA.
All things considered, this was a nice and sweet read, but I still haven't joined the "Chase Brothers's wagon". Oh, I love all the hunkalicious Chase men and I want to marry them all, but there was something lacking in the two books I've read so far. Anyway, I intend to read the next two books in this series - not because I'm particularly hooked on it, but because I'm curious about Marc and Matt, the remaining Chase brothers who haven't found their HEA yet. Plus, I enjoy reading "feel good" stories now and then, even though the Chase family can be a bit too sweet sometimes.

The four Chase brothers are Petal, Georgia’s most sought-after bachelors. Kyle fell for Maggie in book one, Giving Chase. (Highly recommend that one) I was anticipating Shane Chase’s story. He came as a total a**hole in the first book. You got a sense that he hated himself for it, but that’s just how he is. He’s the town sheriff and is a borderline uber-alpha, if you ask me. That is until he meets Cassie Gambol...then he gets bumped down to plain old alpha.
Cassie rolls into town on the run from her abusive ex-husband. She is from LA and relocates to this small town recommended by her brother. Then she is rear-ended by the town matriarch, Shane’s mama, Polly. Shane goes the seen of the accident and is immediately smitten with Cassie.
She is very skittish around people, men especially. Once Shane decides to pursue her, she doesn’t stand a chance. He’s used to steamrolling people into getting what he wants. I really liked their story. Especially how Shane evolves and learns to be accommodating, and caring of Cassie’s feelings. Cassie also grows in the story and becomes herself again after so many years of a horrible marriage. I was rooting for them as a couple, but occasionally got tired of their head butting on almost every issue.
There is some light suspense involving the bastard ex husband that is pretty good. I’m anxious to get going on Chased .

I’ve read all four books in the Chase Brothers series and while I love them all, this was my favorite. It’s a very heartrending, moving story about the power of love and family that will stay with you for a while...and the romance is hot and steamy too! 5 stars!

Wow! I have decided that I want to be adoped by the Chase family. What a clan! I honestly didn't know what I would think of this book. I loved Giving Chase, but I thought that Shane, although hurt from the betrayal of his ex-fiance, was such a player and his thoughtlessness hurt others...particularly women in general. I have to say I thought he redeemed himself in this one.
Cassie Gambol is on the run from her ex-husband. He is so obsessed with controlling her he set out to kill her. When he was awaiting sentencing, he escaped leaving Cassie is fear.
Deciding she needs a new life for herself, she packs up some belongings so start a new life. When she is in a light fender bender in the town of Petal Georgia, she realizes she has attracted more attention than she wanted.
Sheriff Shane Chase knows that Cassie is hiding something from the moment he meets her. He suspects she has be abused by an ex in her past, and despite her uneasiness plants himself directly into her life.
I loved this book! The dynamics between Cassie and Shane was smokin' hot. I thought that between the love of a strong man and his wonderful family Cassie was one lucky woman after all.
I don't know if I would catagory this as erotica. But, not to worry...There are some VERY steamy moments in this book. I can't wait to read the next one!

Just perfect! Beautifully written love story with just enough conflict between the H/H to make it interesting.
Cassie Gambol, a beautiful doctor and a victim of domestic abuse, just wants to disappear from her old life and the terrible memories of her ex-husband and start new somewhere. On the run from her ex, she flees L.A. and ends up in the small town of Petal, Georgia, and soon meets up with the colorful Chase family.
Shane Chase is the town sheriff, and just about the sexiest man Cassie has ever laid eyes on. But she's in no mood to have another dominant male in her life, no matter how much she is attracted to him.
When Shane meets Cassie, it's lust at first sight. Cassie is initially very skittish around Chase, and he feels the beautiful newcomer is hiding something. But Shane and Cassie have an instant connection, and he sets out to woo her. With a lot of patience and passion, Shane eventually finds out all Cassie's secrets, including one that threatens her very life.
Both Cassie and Shane are stubborn people, and there's lots of misunderstandings and fights, but a lot of passionate making up. But each is so good for the other, you'll find yourself rooting for them, knowing that they belong together. The character of Shane really redeems himself from the previous Chase book (Giving Chase), where he came off as quite a jerk. He still has his moments in this book (he can't help it--he's an alpha) but he shows such patience, love and tenderness towards Cassie that you can't help falling for him! This book was a real winner--I can't wait to read the next book about the Chase family, Marc's story, called "Chased".

I find myself very much enjoying this series with the Chase brothers!
Cassie Gambol is running from something and she is most definitely hiding something. Sheriff Shane Chase is no fool he plans to figure out exactly what it is. What he does not expect is to become totally smitten with her and fall in love.
Cassie barely escaped with her life after her ex-husband beat her within an inch of deaths door. She moves from LA, Ca. across the country to the small town of Petal, Ga. It takes a while for he to adjust to the small town life. Everyone is friendly, open and outgoing. But Cassie still gets scared just being alone in a room in the presence of a man. She slowly overcomes her fears. She finds a job and a way to make extra cash on the side. She also begins to notice that she has caught the Sheriff's eye.
Shane cannot help it, he wants to know Cassie. He noticed how she is uncomfortable with men and decides to take things very very slow. The two clash a lot though... Because Cassie does not want to be controlled. She has been there done that, and ain't never going back. Shane is a total alpha male, he is use to being in control and getting his way. When these two butt heads... It goes DOWN neither refuse to back off.
Eventually they learn or should I say Shane learns how to handle things differently. But not as soon as I would have hoped. He screws up. A LOT!
When Cassie starts to get phone calls from her ex-husband everyone goes on high alert. With good reason too because the guy is out for more blood.
This one is a tear jerker.
Thoughts
Love is in the air for the Chase brothers and these women are taking them down one by one. I cannot wait to read the next book in this series to see how Marc Chase gets snared! The writing is good and the dialogue is good, it is filled with lots of laughs and sexy moments in between the drama. Overall I enjoyed it!

Shane Chase the oldest of the Chase Brothers and Petal’s sheriff meets his match when Cassie Gambol comes to town and it immediately rear ended by his mother, Polly. Two strong willed people both with relationship triggers make Taking Chase an explosive romance.
Even some ten odd years after reading this book for the first time every time I re-read it I am in awe of the strength of Cassie Gambol. Cassie’s history isn’t pretty and she is determined to start a new life and leave it behind and even though Shane’s size and obvious dominant personality worries her, she soon finds he also makes her feel safe. Add in the rest of the Chase family and a couple of friends she picks up through the Chases and Cassie realized that she isn’t going to be able to hide the ugly forever. I loved that she didn’t back down from Shane and he quickly understood that he was going to have to change his tactics if he wanted anything with her.
Taking Chase is a messy romance, it is far from easy and there are some moments that steal your breath, but love shines throughout this book and in the end Shane and Cassie find their way with lots of help from those who love them.
*Taking Chase is some of Lauren Dane’s earliest work and is being reissued for fans to continue enjoying.

Cassie is hiding out after she was beaten nearly to death by her ex-husband…who just happened to escape from custody and never was charged.
Chase is a man who stands away from commitment because his ex left him.
There is strong chemistry in a small town setting and family relations.
Entertaining, flirty and fun but still manages deep subject matter creating lots of emotional scarring and room for amazing character growth.

Taking Chase by Lauren Dane is book Two in the Chase Brothers series. This is the story of Cassie and Shane. I have read the previous book but feel this can be a standalone book. This is a re-release as the first publishing was around 2007 and does have a new cover.
Cassie was once Carly Sunderland a successful surgeon but back then she had a ex-husband trying to kill her. Now she on the run because he escaped the system and he out to finish what he started.
Now Cassie is hiding out in Petal, Georgia where she meets Shane ...there is an immediate attraction. But Shane has a bad break up that left him cold to getting into another relationship....but Cassie makes him rethink that. But she is hiding something and he out to find out.

This one was kind of disappointing on two fronts. The first is that battered woman finding trust and love again is one of my favorite tropes (I think it's because my first ever romance was Public Secrets by Nora Roberts), so I really expected to love this book. Second, after meeting Shane Chase in the first book. I thought he was going to have a real struggle falling in love with a woman and being able to trust her.
The storyline of Cassie moving on and growing stronger after her ex-husband nearly killed her was good. I don't have any actual complaints with the trope that I love so much, but I did feel that she overreacted to some things and underreacted to others. The characterization was slightly off in some ways. But since the story stretches over a year and a half, it's not unrealistic how far she comes from beginning to end.
Shane was cheated on by his previous fiancee and since then had trust issues with women that made him basically treat them like sexual conveniences and not much more. I was expecting some big evolution of his character as well, but almost as soon as he meets Cassie, he's putty in her hands. I don't think Lauren Dane could figure out how to have Shane retain all of his alphaness and yet still not scare away Cassie with all her baggage, but the huge about-face in his character is what really lowered the grade of this book for me.
I can't wait to read Matt's story, but I'm thinking about skipping the next one which is the youngest Chase brother, Marc's story along with Liv Davis, Matt's ex-girlfriend. She's definitely my least favorite character in the the entire series.

Enjoyed this fairly light, easy-to-read, trade paperback set in the small, fictitious town of Petal, Georgia. This is the second in the Chase Brother's series and I recommend the books be read in order because the characters overlap.
It was nice reading about all the Chase family members, the eccentric Polly Chase (mom), brothers and a few new characters pop into this one. Taking Chase was a romantic suspense, with a police officer theme and passed through two Christmas time periods to boot!
Cassie (Carly) was on the run from an abusive (convicted & running from the law) ex-husband. She changed her identity and was in the process of rebuilding her life on the other side of the U.S. when she encounters almost all the Chase family within moments from entering the town. Shane was the Sheriff and his spidey sense told him she had a story. The more he was around her, the more attracted and determined he became to find out all he could.
Two nice characters made this story enjoyable. If it weren't for the frequent use of the F-word, this would probably be a Hot book in lieu of Erotic.
When Shane Chase said, "Let me get to know you as a woman." was very sexy. ;-)

Taking Chase is the second book in Lauren Dane's, Chase Brothers series.
I enjoyed this book and feel the writing is better than the first. It was definitely more serious. I liked Shane's and Cassie's characters. They had good chemistry throughout the book, but I wasn't as engaged in their love story as I'd hoped. I felt I was told what their thoughts and feelings were instead of being allowed to experience them. Consequently, I never felt a strong emotional connection to them while reading this book.
Oh, how I love the Chase family. Love them! They're such a fantastic family and Polly, the Chase boy's momma, is a hoot. She's fun, lovable, and extremely vibrant. She's by far my favorite character in the series.

He wants to pull her into his protective loving arms while she pushes to never again be managed by anyone else.
Taking Chase is book #2 of the Chase Brothers series by Lauren Dane. It is a standalone contemporary romance, told from both points of view with a happily ever after, no cliffhanger.

This book was written several years ago and my review is for the new publication of it. As far as I’m aware there are very few changes apart from a little clean up editing wise. This is the second in the series that features the Chase family of Petal, Georgia and from the very beginning it’s clear just how close this sprawling family is.
Cassie is reinventing herself following her abusive marriage and the condition it’s left both her mind and body in. The last thing she needs is a suspicious, meddling town sheriff but Shane is very interested in finding out what makes the pretty newcomer tick. Shane hasn’t really wanted a woman since his heart was broken years before but very quickly realised that Cassie in spite of her secrets holds his attention so could she possibly be the one?
Cassie has flashbacks to the terror that her husband inflicted on her. Unable to practice medicine she’s bravely trying to build a new life but a certain, very persistent Chase man slowly but surely worms his way into her wary heart.
Two very stubborn people with chemistry off the charts. I loved that Shane was this über patient teddy bear . He’s not perfect and actually comes off as previously a bit of a player but once he sets his sights on Cassie honestly there’s no other woman for him, sigh ! You will root for this couple and enjoy their tumultuous journey to a happy ending. Plus the Chase family are such sweeties that you will definitely want to know what happens next.

Synopsis: Cassie is on the run, and has left her old life behind to hide in a small town in Georgia. When she first gets to town, she gets rear-ended, and meets the town sheriff, and ends up being neighbours with a paramedic, who happens to be his brother. While Cassie thinks that the sheriff is good looking, she isn't looking for anything with a man, not even friendship.
Shane is the sheriff and knows that something isn't right with the newest citizen of Petal. But once he figures out that she is more afraid than a perpetrator, he tries to make her as comfortable in town as possible.
As Cassie gets comfortable in town, she makes friends and starts going out. She and Shane keep meeting up, and Shane decides that he is very interested in her. As Shane and Cassie get to know one another, Cassie's past is making itself known.
What I liked: the family dynamics. Shane and his brothers and parents are all friends and love each other and give each other a hard time. The town is small enough that everyone seems to know everyone. Cassie had been beaten down in the past, and the fact that she actually worked to overcome it, rather than just have it miraculously cure itself was refreshing. I liked the build in relationship between Cassie and some of the women in town. I liked how Shane's mother wore Cassie down, even though she didn't make a fantastic first impression, what with running in to her and all. There was a gradual build in trust between Shane and Cassie, and the fact that Cassie didn't just keep her secret until the end was a nice change. It was also nice to see a couple have arguments and work through them. Once Shane and Cassie said "I love you", there was still quite a bit of story, as they both worked through their individual issues.
What I didn't like: Shane was very dismissive of the fact that Cassie might have been on the run from an abusive lover. "Someone who slapped her around a couple of times". Women don't go on the run from "someone who slap them around a couple of times", and an officer of the law should know that. I thought that Shane and Cassie's relationship developed overly quickly, even though the trust was slower to follow.
Overall impression: characters that seemed real. 3rd person POV, mostly alternating between Cassie and Shane, but with other members of the family and friends chiming in from time to time.

This was better than the first one, but boy did this two have past issues that just keep rearing their ugly heads right when everything was going good. We met Shane in the first book when he shortly dated his now sister in law. Although I wasn’t a bit fan of that intermingling of siblings and picking up your brothers’ exes, well, Kyle was the better choice in that case. But Shane always seemed like the dark, sexy and brooding type. Typical cop behavior.
Of course I had to love that he got a heroine that has gone through a lot and who is actually on the run from her ex husband who went completely nuts and tried to kill her. She comes to Petal, Georgia looking for a new life and with a new identity. She is now Cassie Gambol. She left everything behind and will never be able to work in her profession again. But she escaped with her life and that’s what counts.
I loved Cassie, she’s a survivor. Definitely a great heroine and one that adds a little something different to the Chase clan. Shane had to break down her barriers and get her to trust him but it was perfect to see, and he even managed to rein in some of his alpha behavior.
Goes to show that when the Chase family wants something done, they get it done. I continue to fall in love with the Chase’s as a series and as a family. The women that have come into the family have all bonded and become great friends. And speaking of family, even though Cassie is on the run she does have a protective brother. I wouldn’t mind seeing more of him in the future.
TAKING CHASE had more of a suspense element than the previous book, and it was done well. The conflict was interesting without overwhelming the story. And the main couple in this one was excellent. They both gave as good as they got and were evenly matched. Definitely tenderly sweet.

This was slightly better than the first book of the series but not that much. I think it had something to do with the time Ms. Dane took to develop her characters a bit better. Shane, though... I can't say that I've changed my mind about him even if the author worked hard at giving him some substance.
In Giving Chase, he was the commitment-phobe who treated Maggie horribly. His excuse? A bad experience with a cheating ex. What I don't understand was that this phobia simply evaporated with Cassie. Okay, okay. I get it. Blah blah destiny...whatever. But there wasn't even any residual or anything, not until the end anyway. I just couldn't see someone changing personalities that fast. He actually went all guns ablazing without any qualms about starting a relationship with her. There was no hesitation at all.
This book was also a little more of an emotional heavy-weight than the first book and that's primarily because it dealt with Cassie's history of abuse. For the most part, her story was a text book case only her ex was borderline murderous. I like how Cassie was determined to take care of herself but sometimes, her reluctance to accept help was a bit over the top. And Shane. Jesus Murphy Jones. That's not how you handle a woman with a history of abuse. You're supposed to check your He-Man antics at the door, fool.
VERDICT: Over all, I think we're heading in the right direction even though I'm still not finding any chemistry between characters and I'm still not finding anything remotely addictive about these books. I'm not even sure I'm at all interested in reading the next two. But I'm not about to add another item to THINGS JOY STARTED AND DIDN'T FINISH list.

I was pleased with this book. After reading Giving Chase (and loving it) and Chased (and being irritated by it) I was worried that I wouldn’t like Taking Chase. I actually really enjoyed the book. I was also worried about liking Shane, based on his character in Giving Chase, but he was redeemed and became a likable character. I also really liked Cassie, and she was really good for Shane.
However, my only complaint was with Shane. I never thought I would complain about this, but at times Shane was (almost) too mushy with his feelings. I understood the author’s intent of clearly showing/telling Cassie Shane’s intentions and feelings, but at times it was a little too much. But they were just minor irritations that had me rolling my eyes and moving on with the book.
I would read this again, and I will definitely be buying a copy of this book.

Fantastic! I liked this second book in Lauren Dane's, Chase Brother series more than I liked the first... and I have heard they only get better, so I'm glad to have something to look forward to!
And can I just say how happy I am that Shane's not a jerk anymore?! I was really hating on him for a while there! But he definitely cleaned up his act pretty fast... and he was so SWEET with Cassie! I fell in love with their story... I will be reading this one over again that's for sure.

Book 2 in the Chase Brothers series has convinced me I want to 1) move to Petal, Georgia and 2) get myself adopted by the Chase family. But since that is not going to happen I guess I'll just have to say Lauren Dane did her usual outstanding writing job: tight plot, engaging characters and colorfully detailed setting. Great read!

This is very similar to the first book in the series, but that didn't stop me from enjoying it. Once again a sweet and easy read.

This is the second book in the Chase Brothers series by Lauren Dane. While it might stand on its own - they’re better read in order as events happen in the previous book that impact this one.
While they all have some issues, this is probably my least favorite book of the series. Shane is a completely different character than he was in the first book. I expected a redemption/healing/transformation arc of some kind. Nope, he’s just magically fine/healed/over his ex.
While at first I had great sympathy for Cassie as a victim of domestic violence, it grew tiring fast. Anytime she didn’t like something Shane did she would complain about being “managed”. Everything was Shane’s fault. But if it were anyone else it was called cajoling or some other friendly term.
Other than saying Shane & Cassie found the other attractive, these two had no chemistry. It was argue, fight, Cassie storms off until Shane apologizes. On repeat with some sex scenes thrown in. This takes place over 18 months and little is done to show the reader these two have worked through any of this in a healthy manner.
While there’s not as much of the catty interactions from the first book, this writing still feels very rudimentary.
Narration:
I continue to enjoy Aletha George’s performance.
While they all have some issues, this is probably my least favorite book of the series. Shane is a completely different character than he was in the first book. I expected a redemption/healing/transformation arc of some kind. Nope, he’s just magically fine/healed/over his ex.
While at first I had great sympathy for Cassie as a victim of domestic violence, it grew tiring fast. Anytime she didn’t like something Shane did she would complain about being “managed”. Everything was Shane’s fault. But if it were anyone else it was called cajoling or some other friendly term.
Other than saying Shane & Cassie found the other attractive, these two had no chemistry. It was argue, fight, Cassie storms off until Shane apologizes. On repeat with some sex scenes thrown in. This takes place over 18 months and little is done to show the reader these two have worked through any of this in a healthy manner.
While there’s not as much of the catty interactions from the first book, this writing still feels very rudimentary.
