In The Tenth Door , Michele Hébert recounts the stunning story of her spiritual training with legendary yoga master Walt Baptiste. Journeying with her, you are transported from San Francisco through a years-long stint of near solitude in the jungles of El Salvador, as that country moves from seeming tranquility to revolution. In this exotic venue, she comes face to face with challenges that test her devotion, her carefully cultivated yogic discipline, and even her earthly existence. This unexpectedly humorous and intimate story transcends the world of physical yoga and explores its deep, ancient mysteries. The lessons she learns from Walt Baptiste's brilliant but often unorthodox methods are at the heart of her memoir, which illuminates timeless teachings and authentic practices in a tale that is as accessible as it is captivating. A fascinating story of a student at the feet of her guru. Memoir. Michele Hebert feels compelled to leave Ohio for California, and in San Francisco, by chance or most likely, by divine purpose, she ends up at a cafe owned by Walt Baptiste, ends up swapping serving shifts for yoga classes, and finds herself on a path to spiritual purposes. Walt Baptiste is devoted spiritual teacher teaching her harsh and amazing lessons, and she finds herself traveling down to El Salvador on the brink and during the revolution to help create a retreat center. A memoir of a young woman finding herself and a life of spiritual purpose.
A beautiful, spiritual journey that provides the reader with interesting insight about the author as well as Walter and Magana Baptiste (Baptiste school of yoga) and their philosophy. VERY interesting with many hidden gems and great quotes.
The Tenth Door is one of my favorites of all time. I met the author, Michele Hebert, in her meditation classes where I was introduced the book. As soon as I went home that night, I ordered the book. Having received the book, I finished it in couple of days as it was so good! Michele talks about her spiritual journey and her story is just fascinating. She talks about those teachings and practices that are given to her by her teacher Walt Baptiste, and how she finds her self becoming more and more centered with time. When you go through her story and see how things are being shifted at her, you notice things start to be shifted at you at a mental level as well, amazing! So having read the book the first time, I felt like it was exactly what I needed at that moment. And guess what? The very same feeling after the second time. Especially after going to the Michele's yoga and meditation classes regularly, and learning some of those teachings she mentions in her book, I appreciated the book even more. It really opens new 'door's each time you read it. In all respects, I truly recommend The Tenth Door for those who want to explore the world of yoga, mind, the Self, and evolving. If you are in San Diego, I highly recommend her classes as well, she is an amazing teacher. Ps. This review made me want to read again!
UG! I do not know why, but this book seriously took me FOREVER to read. It isn't even very many pages, or heavy material. It may not be the most entertaining book you read but it's not bad by any means. It's moderately enlightening. I gained a bit of insight about the yoga masters and mini-lessons on the enlightening process. This is a short story for one person's success story. It definitely makes me wish I could stumble upon such great opportunities and steal away to develop myself spiritually.
Great read! There really are no shortcuts in a life lived with trust and aspiration. Travel with an amazing woman from Cleveland to San Francisco to the jungles of El Salvador on a yogic journey of personal discovery and enlightenment. Spiritual teacher and guide Walt Baptiste accepts his new student, challenges her, and trains her to open the Tenth Door. You will love it!
I loved this book: a spiritual biography. Michele writes engagingly of her experiences and practices in yoga and meditation both in San Francisco and in the jungles of El Salvador. The teachings from her teacher Walt Baptiste are clearly and beautifully described along with how they have positively impacted her life. I could not put this book down until the last page.
Loved this book, front to back! The Tenth Door is a romance, a mystery, a travel guide, a Yoga memoir, and a spiritual autobiography ... all rolled into one fantastic read. Michele Hebert's magical page-turner almost made me late to yoga class! If I could give it 10 stars, I would. The Secret Chapter is magical ...
This book was totally and completely transformational as a yogi. I felt so deeply connected to the experiences of the author that I reached out on the website and emailed Michele. I now have this as part of my required reading on my Yoga 4 Love Advanced Training Programs Online 200 hour! I love this and feel every yogi or yogini should read it.
This book is one of my all-time favorites, right up there with Patti Smith's JUST KIDS. "The Tenth Door" is a true adventure—vividly expressive, exquisitely written. Wholeheartedly, I cherish this book for the perfect blend of fascinating storytelling and enlightening information.
You will love this book as much as I did. A spiritual adventure with lots of insights into how to live your life with purpose and connection. Enjoy! R. Williams co-author of The Mindfulness Workbook for Addiction.
I found this book to be inspiring and full of wisdom for leading a positive life. My favorite quote is: You must control your own mind or negativity will. I unequivocally recommend this book.
