Some interesting history in this small coffee-table book, such as the philanthropic work done by the British after liberating the island from the French in the Napoleonic wars, which delighted the locals. On a sadder note, there was the awful massacre of thousands of Italian soldiers on Hitler's orders as WWII drew to a close, as well as the tragic earthquake of 1953, one of countless seismic disturbances that have hit the area over the centuries.
