Lizzie is so wrapped up in her own problems, including the fact that her grandmother is dating, that she doesn't notice her best friend Nancy desperately trying to hide her dyslexia.

I really felt for Nancy in this book, though the novel still read like a constant whinge fest.

Everyone around Lizzie is keeping secrets it seems. Her grandmother all of a sudden is getting dressed up and going out. And then horror of horrors! It turns out she's DATING someone! And then her best friend is also having mysterious absences. Samantha tho also has a secret of her own. Deciding to get back at Samantha (the sixth grade's most popular girl) for what she did in "the Party" she decided to send anonymous love notes to Samantha to make her think they're from her brother who she has a crush on (Adam). Meanwhile, the 6th graders are getting reading for a Read A Thon. Despite Nancy's disdain.
My Thoughts:
*I think it's pretty obvious that Gram has a date. Shopping? New shoes? Dress. And Sam can't tell that (shaking my head)
*Maybe I can understand Lizzie's mom being upset about seeing her mom with someone other than her Dad. Even though it's been YEARS. But in Lizzie's case, I don't see the big deal about being upset over her grandmother dating. Just because she's old doesn't mean she doesn't have needs. You can have friend's and family and still get lonely for a partner. But of course, Lizzie's just 12 and doesn't quite get the different types of love thing yet.
*And it's also clear that Nancy has some kind of reading disorder and that the meetings are she's getting some kind of special help.
*Nancy's reasoning at the end of "well you kept a secret to" didn't really count because Lizzie didn't keep the secret of the love letters from her. So it's not the same thing AT ALL!
Rating 5:
The secrets in this were SO easy to figure out. I wondered how dense could Lizzie be not to recognize her grandmother was dating and that her best friend had a learning disability. Although to be fair the teacher didn't either. And then a HUGE deal was made about Gram. I never had to deal with this situation because I only ever saw my grandparents with each other. But I think I'd understand that if one of their spouses died eventually they'd want to spend time with someone else. I can't even imagine how it would be at Gram's age to have gone all those years without her husband and how lonely she must have been. And then I have to remind myself that Lizzie's just twelve and hasn't even started to date. But if Ralph is a good person and makes Gram happy they really need to be happy for her and stop giving her grief over it. They almost make her cry and because of what? She's a human being and craves male companionship? (SMH). I say GO GRAM! GET YOURS! Actually, I'm a little jealous!

I don't think I read this one as a child so this was new to me. Lizzie really likes to get her own way and I guess we should be thankful she is keeping a diary rather than having these tantrums for the world to see but then if everybody (including Lizzie) weren't keeping secrets... scratch that... Lizzie shouldn't be so nosy!

I definitely remember this cover. The main character, the brunette (I'm going by the first book's cover), looks like a nosy snoop, trying to read someone else's diary.
