The Bravest Girls in the World tells the story of Toshi, a brave young girl who is afraid of one thing: dogs. She meets a friend who helps her overcome her fears, and they support one another in embracing their courage in other areas of their life. This children's book is one of very few that I've read in which all of the main characters are African American girls. I appreciated the themes of confronting your fears and girls supporting one another to push forward in their personal goals (as opposed to competing).

This book relates to friendhsips and conquering fears. The character is really afraid of dogs, which I could relate to because when I was younger I had a cousin who was so terrified of dogs and we never knew why. However, when the character meets a new friend that has a dog she begins overcoming her fear!
