I brought this book for my daugther for her 17th birthday when she also recived a Nikon D3100. She found this book somewhat helpful but found that she couldn't keep reading it for long periods of time due to it being quite detailed. Even though this book is written for Dummies it is more for those who actually have some idea of using DSLR cameras. This book has lots of detailed information of each function of the camera including parts you don't need to use. She found herself skipping whole sections as she didn't need to know that information but apart from that she found that it helped give her more of an understanding and give her a start to her photography.
