Originally an actor, principally with the Tadhbhearc in Galway, and The Abbey Theatre, he played lead roles on Broadway in MJ Molloy's The King of Friday’s Men and his own play Home is the Hero. He also acted in films, notably in Brendan Behan’s The Quare Fellow. With the success of his third book, Rain on the Wind, he devoted his time to writing. His plays include Mungo’s Mansion (1946) and Home is the Hero (1952).
His novels include I Am Alone (1949); Rain on the Wind (1950); The Bogman (1952); and the historical trilogy Seek the Fair Land (1959), The Silent People (1962) and The Scorching Wind (1964). His short stories were collected in The Green Hills (1956), God Made Sunday (1962) and The Coll Doll and other Stories (1962).
He also published a number of books for children, including Island of the Great Yellow Ox (1966); and Flight of the Doves (1968), which was adapted for the cinema.

Deze bundel is de Nederlandse vertaling van 'God made sunday', het lange titelverhaal uit de bundel, aangevuld met twaalf korte verhalen. De auteur was zeker niet onbekend, maar hoorde tot de meest bekende Ierse schrijvers. Walter Macken groeide op in het westen van Ierland, in de stad Galway. In de zomer van 1968, liftte ik met een studiegenoot door Engeland, Schotland en Ierland en bracht toen ook een nacht in de jeugdherberg in Galway door. Ik bezocht er een pub waar flink werd gedronken en vrolijk werd gezongen. Ik herinner me het ruige landschap nabij de Atlantische oceaan en de snelle wisselingen in de weersomstandigheden, met wind, regen en zonneschijn. Ik herinner me ook het beeld van een katholiek land.
Dit boek kostte in die tijd eenguldenvijftig, dat is nu zeventig eurocent en het is nog heel goed leesbaar en ook boeiend.
In het eerste en langste verhaal bevinden we ons op een eiland aan de westkust van Ierland, met een geisoleerde gemeenschap, afhankelijk van de zee rondom. Ook de verteller in het verhaal heeft mensen door verdrinking verloren. Hij wil toch weer in het reine komen met de zee en bouwt een boot. Hij overwint zo zijn angst.
In de verhalen komen vaak kleine drama's aan de orde. Een meisje is zwanger en wordt verstoten. De pastoor vraagt mensen om haar tijdelijk in huis te nemen omdat haar vader haar de deur weigert. Niemand wil dat en de pastoor neemt haar op in zijn huis, met roddel en verdachtmaking als gevolg. Na dramatische verwikkelingen komt het toch weer goed met het meisje en de vader. De kracht van de verhalen zit vooral in de eenvoud en de herkenbaarheid van de emoties, ook al staat het katholieke Ierse dorpsleven van halverwege de vorige eeuw best ver van ons af. Vooral de sympathieke figuur van dorpspastoor Solo vind ik aanstekelijk overkomen. Hij komt in meerdere verhalen terug. Bovendien weet Walter Macken onderhoudend en spannend te schrijven. De man is niet oud geworden, hij stierf toen hij 51 jaar oud was.

Jaaaa nog maar 1 boek voor het einde van het jaar! Sommige verhalen in dit boek grijpen je aan, vooral het laatste zielige verhaal en het verhaal met een persoon (helaas wel een man) die Murt heet :D

Walter Macken’s collection of short stories reveals the boundless obligation provoked by the sea and the land for the colorfully depicted lives in rural Ireland. While simple in language, and a generally slow read, one could imagine the setting perfectly and can't help but smile, cry, or laugh along with each page.

I sincerely loved « God made Sunday » but it took me ages to read all the other short stories ... I don’t know why but probably because they were all very rural and bucolic which is charming at first ... but boring (to me) on the long run.

Gorgeously moving in places. Straightforward tales. Unexpected tales. Macken builds carefully crafted stories peopled with strong believable characters. The eponymous story is nothing short of a masterpiece in both concept and execution. I particularly enjoyed the three tales of Fr ‘Solo’, and the simplicity of ‘The Lion’, for example, belies the complexity of human interaction. Highly recommended.
