This 280 page book accompanied the International Exhibition "El Greco of Toledo" which opened in April of 1982 at The Prado is Spain, before traveling to The National Gallery of Art, The Toledo Museum of Art, and the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts. One could call it a catalog of the exhibit, with additional commentary and analysis of the artist and his works.
One of the better texts I've read in this sort of exhibition-overview book. Really helpful locating El Grevo within the currents of Counter Reformation theology and iconography. That said, the text does tend to overshadow the actual images. The plates of El Greco's work serve to illustrate the text, rather than the text explaining the plates.
Read in preparation for the May trip. The text was dated and advanced some of the stereotypes that more recent works have debunked. The illustrations were full color and excellent.
