Ruskin Bond is an Indian author of British descent. He is considered to be an icon among Indian writers and children's authors and a top novelist. He wrote his first novel, The Room on the Roof, when he was seventeen which won John Llewellyn Rhys Memorial Prize in 1957. Since then he has written several novellas, over 500 short stories, as well as various essays and poems, all of which have established him as one of the best-loved and most admired chroniclers of contemporary India. In 1992 he received the Sahitya Akademi award for English writing, for his short stories collection, "Our Trees Still Grow in Dehra", by the Sahitya Akademi, India's National Academy of Letters in India. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1999 for contributions to children's literature. He now lives with his adopted family in Landour near Mussoorie.
Some words have the magic to take you to some known or unknown places. Such words usually come from the pen of Mr Bond. His stories sometimes take you to your past and sometimes to a fantasy world. This book is a collection of some most endearing stories that let you visit in the past to your childhood. The beauty of all the stories lies in the simplicity that in itself is magnificent. How about plucking a flower from a Coral tree? Very simple, but having the endowment of conceiving happiness that goes beyond the moment and lies forever in a corner of your mind. School children going on their way to or back from school; school friends having fun while obeying and sometimes overlooking the house rules; experiencing the shakes of the Earth; chasing a pret; listening to a story of the fantasy world; experiencing the flora and fauna of the Garhwal hills while wondering about the connection of modernity with the safety of environment; looking for a train coming out of a tunnel and wandering through some lost homes. Not only these but there is much more to make you smile. Though the stories have been published in different books at different times, yet this anthology has the power to keep you hooked to the book. My most favourite among these is Getting Granny's Glasses. I call it my feel-good story. Go and get your copy of these charming, nostalgic and heart-warming tales.
Not a single new story here, if you are a Bond loyalist e.g: Granny's glasses has been published as a separate book years ago, some stories are a hotchpotch of 'Long Walk for Bina' and others, 'The Cherry Tree' is a classic from the 80s, 'The Tunnel' is the story which I guess was written in the 90s or even earlier. Rather than spending money on such books, I would prefer to pick the classic stories from the books that are already on my shelf for years.
It seems that, for obvious and unknown reasons, new writings aren't coming from the master storyteller. Meanwhile, the publication houses continue to rebrand his stories and sell the same material with different titles and scatter those in new(!) books.
A lovely read, 14 short stories in one book, very beautiful visual descriptions, very simple and flowing. It felt like I was living in nostalgia for a memory I haven't even experienced before. It was a quick read. And it's Ruskin Bond, need I say more??
