A loner boy and a flashy girl find common ground via cosplay in this sweet and spicy romcom!
Wakana has spent every summer vacation on his own...until now! With a friend like Marin at his side, he's about to get a taste of everything summer has to offer and more—the pool, fireworks, extra homework…and of course, cosplay!
Now that she's crossed off bronzed fighter Veronica-tya from her to-do list, Marin has set her sights on a succubus from one of her favorite manga series! But when she picks out a questionable location for the photo shoot, Wakana's the one about to be left red in the face and hot under the collar!
Rating: 10 "Are you fucking kidding me" negative stars.
Bottom line: a girl throwing her half naked body at a guy without the latter giving any consent is not cute, not every guy enjoys this kind of treatment, you know.
Guess what, if girls don't like being gripped, touched, thrown against the wall/floor/bed, kissed and groped without consent or at least being asked first, what makes you think a guy would enjoy this being done to him?!
That is just fucking gross.
The heroine's behaviours disgust me.
Plus, if girls do not enjoy seeing a guy suddenly taking off his shirt and trousers in front of them, completely without warning and out of the blue, what makes you think a guy would enjoy this being done to him?!
And...two underage teens in a love hotel...? Are you kidding me?
PS: I am disgusted that at the beginning of the story the heroine jumped the guy and she didn't even check if the guy already had a romantic partner or not, so basically she was making a move/throwing herself at a guy who might already be romantically involved with someone else.
This is actually my favourite volume of My Dress Up Darling so far! It perfectly encapsulates everything that is loveable and enjoyable about this series so far. The scenes where Gojou and Kitagawa go to a love hotel together for a cosplay photoshoot is my favourite - they are so adorable and awkward together 🥺🥲 will there even be a love confession this time around?! They are certainly growing closer…!
Gojo’s done a lot of work on Marin’s latest cosplay, but he’s also having some serious misgivings. Speaking of misgivings, Marin tries to give Gojo a makeover, to limited success. Then they spend the whole volume hanging out and wind up in a love hotel, which sounds about right for this series.
In case you were wondering, this is the volume of the manga that covers up to the end of the anime - the final pages are literally the season finale. Still, it’s interesting to see these scenes as originally intended, so there’s something here even for the person seeing this a second time.
One thing this series doesn’t get enough credit for is how smart it is at skewering tropes in its contemporaries. In addition to the goofy St. Slippery’s eroge game from volume 1, this time we have the pitch perfect dunk on series with tragically long titles (and poor Gojo’s hilarious cognitive dissonance on a slice-of-life series that features a succubus) that helpfully manages to lend itself to some wild antics.
Even as Gojo continues to live a much better, fuller life thanks to his friendship with Marin, I love that he is still fundamentally himself at the core and that’s really what she loves about him. It’s also welcome that he is clearly a, umm, healthy teenager, but he’s not a degenerate - it’s such a balance that I’ve rarely, if ever, seen pulled off.
That also doesn’t preclude him from speaking his mind when one particular cosplay goes way too far for his liking and he notably doesn’t try to say no or forbid Marin, he simply says that he himself can’t be part of it. That’s a subtle moment, but him not being a scold is important to emphasize his respect for her.
The clothing expedition is such a fun story and the manga version has a much more adorable visual styling that wouldn’t be duplicatable in the anime (although the joke with the porn in the love hotel is better in the anime, so it’s a give-and-take).
As a series of vignettes, this whole book works as a parade of joyful moments between two people who are super into each other that is here to make the audience laugh and go ‘aww’, sometimes both at once, with a ‘yikes’ thrown in now and then. The love hotel is a full on comedic farce that is clearly about to head into a whole other genre until the hormones get stifled.
Then the fireworks festival really makes Gojo reflect on all the things Marin has done for him over the course of their friendship, while she learns a way to push his buttons she was previously unaware of and that’s more than enough to make her day. Part of Marin’s charm is that she is absolutely forthright, if not forthcoming, about just doing stuff and enjoying life.
The last section is all about the time-honoured horror movie date (not a date) that goes as expected, minus how adorably clinical Gojo gets about the special effects. It’s amazing how good your series can be when both leads are strong and simply having them hang out is a treat.
Ironically, the absolute best Marin image from this one is the shot of her wrapped in the blanket near the end, showing the least skin in the entire series. It’s such a great visual and comes just before the very, very lovely ending.
This is such a sweet series with such a ridiculous amount of fan service in the name of cosplay that it almost sneaks by at this point. Marin wears skimpy stuff, she doesn’t care, the end, honestly. Watching these two bond over a shared hobby, but coming to like one other for themselves, is the real treat and why this series works as well as it does. It’s such a return to form after the massive info dumps kept getting in the way in volume 3.
5 stars - yeah, explicit content, I guess, but that heart of gold is why this is such a banger. The book that has only two leads for its entire run time and never feels empty or boring is a rare sight and this one shows how it’s done AND makes it look easy.
We stan a healthy, responsible, and beautiful romance built on respect and trust for each other. Gojo and Marin may just be my favorite couple because of how healthy, fun, and beautiful their relationship is. Marin is so respectful towards Gojo's feelings and boundaries, which speaks volumes to her emotional maturity and compassion towards others. Meanwhile, Gojo is willing to go the extra mile for Marin and give her confidence and support when she needs it. Damn, I just love these two so much and will happily devour each new volume that comes out.
Probably the best volume in the series so far since it covers the cutest moments.
First Gojo and the lovely Marin want to do a new photoshoot and Marin books a love motel room. It's cute and to work at first but turns into a horny situation and is extra fun and spicey. Then we get a festival because, it's manga, but well done. And the ending...awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.
gojo and marin are so cute! 😭top tier couple; it's giving kimi ni todoke wholesomeness vibes
(kimi ni is obviously less racy but this really isn't that much honestly! a lot of the fanservice feels more 'ah yes, this is my genre, have a mandatory panty shot' than anything else)
Marin's bikini selfie boobies...! Marin's naked tan booty...! Marin's smile with artificial pointy teeth...!(?) Marin's gym shirt underboob...!!! Marin's cute surprised face when Wakana says he can't do the Veronica costume because of the titties...! Embarrassed Marin when Wakana says he can see her as Rizu-kyun...! Marin's thighs, crotch, and tummy when she first tries on the Rizu-kyun costume...! Marin's boobs bulging under the bib-thing in the Rizu-kyun costume...! Marin's ass when she shows off the wings and tail...!!! The curve of Marin-as-Rizu's back-hip-ass-thigh in the second picture they take...! Marin's crotch as seen from the rear as she's about to mount Wakana...! Marin's surprised yelp when Wakana grabs her sides...!!! Marin's plump thighs when she sits against the wall in embarrassment...!!!!! The color illustration of Marin-as-Rizu in the front of the volume...!!!
This Volume was great! Putting the focus back on their burgeoning romance and ramping up the laughs a lot, this feels like the true start to the Wakana/Marin romance... even though they won't admit it to each other. Highlights: - Having made the barely covering Veronica cosplay for Marin, Wakana refuses to take pics and go to wherever she's going with it. When questioned, he admits that the outfit is too much temptation with how Marin's body looks. She makes fun of him and lets him off the hook, but teases him some, which they both secretly enjoy. - After some clothes shopping for Wakana, they head off to relax at a manga cafe, where Marin introduces him to a series about a cutesy succubus who is always trying to get a writer to succumb to her, but it always ends up funny or distracting to the succubus and she is never able to get to drain him. - Marin wants her next cosplay to be Liz-kyun, the succubus from the manga. Due to the art style, Wakana must make his own interpretation of the costume. Marin loves it and books a photography session at a "studio". - The "studio" turns out to be a love hotel, which causes much hilarity and awkwardness. Caught up in the fun of taking the pictures, Wakana takes a pic of Marin above him, only when hearing moans from a nearby room do they realize that she is basically straddling him. When his hands go to her waist to prevent her from feeling him hard, they both get fast heartbeats, and question their feelings towards the other. - With the summer ending, Wakana helps Marin complete her homework and they head off to a festival, complete with fireworks. Her sore feet (from wearing full traditional yukata) has him carrying her on his back, where she admits that she wants to keep seeing fireworks and going to festivals with him. He realizes that he would like that a lot. - After a scary movie night, Marin can't sleep so Wakana keeps her company on the phone so she can calm down. Right after he falls asleep, she says that she loves him, knowing that he can't hear it, but feeling better about saying it out loud.
Volume 5 ends at the same place Season 1 of the anime ends. I'm really enjoying this title. It's so unlike most manga I read, it's a nice change of pace. I'll definitely be continuing this title soon, as well as probably watching the anime.
This is one of my favorite volumes so far. It was very sweet and wholesome. After the Veronica cosplay (which we didn't really see), the next one is a succubus named Rizu. The whole love hotel scenes were very funny and the costume turned out great in my opinion since Gojou had to improvise for the first time. But I want to focus on the festival and its aftermath. The festival was so cozy and you can see how important it was for Gojou. As the two continue to spend more time together, their relationship is also improved. This volume ends with Chapter 39 and it is also where the anime ended. So from this point on, everything will be new to me.
More cringe than cute but it is the cute moments that are keeping me reading. I wonder if the anime is more interesting than the manga? Anyway, I don’t recommend this…don’t read it based on my review. ✌🏻
I’m really enjoying this series so far. While there are a few things I don’t agree with (like some of the characters thinking that if you’re too short or tall for a character, you shouldn’t cosplay them, this is from one of the previous volumes, if I believed that, then I wouldn’t have many options since I’m so short), overall I love this series. This one was especially fun, although I should warn you that it’s more risqué than the previous volumes, it doesn’t bother me since I’m used to it and sometimes it’s funny to me how awkward some of the characters get. Like I keep getting surprised that Marin gets embarrassed since she doesn’t seem like the type to get embarrassed much. It was so cute hearing Marin’s thoughts on how much she loves Gojo. Although, again I’m getting a little annoyed with how she talks and I’m still wondering if that’s how it’s written in Japanese or if the translator took some liberties, I don’t know why they would, but it’s possible. I’m pretty sure this book is wrong about succubus, they didn’t mention anything about them wanting to have sex with men and then they kill them, I just felt like I had to mention that.
I realize I’ve been reading lots of opposites attract and grumpy x sunshine books lately, although Gojo more shy and or doesn't have confidence in himself and is a loner than grumpy. I love seeing them hang out and do stuff together. Marin looked so pretty, cute and different when she was dressed up in a yukata. I always love it when characters go to festivals and wear yukatas in manga. I would love to go to Japan and do that someday.
Overall, I really enjoyed this volume and am loving this series and the characters so much.
More of a 3.5 star rating; I really liked reading this volume since it showed a bit more of Gojo and Marin spending time together outside of anything cosplay-related. I was also pleasantly surprised to see that despite the pair being in a love hotel, there wasn’t as much fan-service in this volume compared to past volumes. Things ended on a very wholesome note in the last chapter but especially in the last 2 or 3 pages, and I’m curious to see what other activities Gojo and Marin do next.

We see our dress-up team working on their latest outfit: a light novel succubus project and later we see them spending time together as summer vacation comes to an end. It really does look like Marin has grown strong feelings for Goju. A (100%/Outstanding)
