Started off really well but just sort of lost itself. Most definitely not my favourite book from Sam or Jenny.

Huge disappointment. Individually these authors are a lot better than this. It collapsed and lost its way after a few chapters. My first and last co-author buy.

A laugh-out-loud book featuring two great MCs, chaos, SHIVERRRSSS, and family! This was fab!
I was absolutely HYPED when I saw that Sam Copeland was writing a new series! I just LOVE LOVE his books, he is one of my auto-buy authors. This book sounded hilarious and fun and I loved that he co-wrote it and that we also got two illustrators instead of one!
In this book we follow two MCs, Lenny a boy who lives with his mom and thinks his dad is a spy because that is a better alternative than what is probably the truth and Agatha who lives with 7 siblings and a mom and dad in a small house. Lenny is the new kid and he arrives at the perfect time! Because something strange is happening at the school. There are SHIVERS happening and with them strange things. Even stranger? The fact that only Agatha, and now Lenny, can remember what happened. Yep, you can imagine that causes some weird looks and some accusations happening. We see our hapless duo try to figure out what is going on and why weird things keep happening. I really loved reading about the SHIVER and seeing what happened. From evil chickens to no gravity. The book made me laugh, gasp, and laugh so so much more.
Agatha was such a fun character! I love how smart she was, but never seemed to rub it in. Or not that much at least, haha. I could imagine that she wasn’t too happy with taking people home given that she has so many siblings and the house is just pure chaos. I loved that she loved books and learning all she could about everything, I think if she was real and we met when I was a kid we would have been friends.
Lenny, oh LORD, how did that boy even get this far in school? I mean, even the AI owls from the library thought he needed a book on his first words… He does show he knows things.. but other times he just is pretty empty up there. He doesn’t know how doors work. Instead of just FINDING toilet paper he uses his sock. He thinks Batman is real. I could go on. He is 9 years old but how he reacted at times I would rather give him 6. XD That boy. I feel for his mom. And I feel for Agatha. Yes, she is fine with being his friend, but at times you can see that she is also wondering how in heavens is she going to get anywhere. Despite Lenny being Lenny, I did like his character and I am happy that we got to see him in his POV, because I am not sure if I would have liked him as much without that. Now I could see closer to what was making him tick, and I saw, next to him being annoyingly oblivious, that he was also a sweet boy who tried his best.
I loved how both of them thought the other was an assistant. Didn’t speak it out loud.. well until the end. Oh Lenny, you shouldn’t have said that.
Later on we also get a new character in the group. Gregor. I won’t tell you more than that, but I did love this character and I do hope that we will see more him in the next books.
I was worried that we would never get to the underpants of Chaos, I wouldn’t have been surprised if it hadn’t happened. Given how Sam Copeland’s previous series had a running gag that the MC would never really change into the being on the cover/title. XD But thankfully, it did happen. It was a short section, but I am happy that it happened. I do hope that Lenny learned something about changing his underwear. XD
I did think it was funny that there were changes/differences between the different illustrations. How the one in Agatha’s POV seemed to follow what the text was saying. For instance in the Lenny POV we see Agatha’s bag twice as a bag with straps. However in the Agatha POV we see a backpack with zipper and that is also what the story tells us. Or how Agatha’s hair is curly and messy (just like what is said in the text) in one of the POVs illustrations and then normal bunches and pretty well lined-up in the other. Plus, there were other situations
The ending was exciting, fun, but I also foresee some trouble on the horizon given that last illustration.
All in all, I had such a big big laugh at this one, it was never boring and I read it in two sessions (sadly dinner came in between). I would highly recommend this one to everyone who needs something silly in their life and doesn’t mind a tad (OK, a lot) of chaos. I cannot wait what is next for Topps and Tuchus.

Mijn 9-jarige zoon en ik zijn grote fans van de boeken van Sam Copeland. We lazen samen zijn vorige werken over Kasper (Kasper wordt een kip, een T rex, een mammoet,…) en we lagen regelmatig in een deuk over de humor en de absurde situaties.
We vroegen ons af of dit bij zijn nieuwste boek Het raadsel van de boosaardige onderbroeken opnieuw het geval zou zijn en ja hoor, ook nu moesten we regelmatig luidop lachen met de vele grappige passages.
“Ik zei tegen juf Appelgat dat Ralph de Maltesers van Thomas had opgegeten en toen ze uitgegild was en snapte dat ik het over chocoladesnoepjes had en niet over kleine hondjes…”
Dit keer heeft hij het boek echter niet alleen geschreven, maar samen met Jenny Pearson, een eveneens Engelse auteur van kinderboeken, die bekend werd met haar debuutboek De superwonderlijke reis van Freddie.
Heel leuk is ook dat er veel illustraties in het boek staan, die alles nog wat levendiger maken. Die werden getekend door Robin Boyden en Katie Kear.
In Het raadsel van de boosaardige onderbroeken volgen we Agatha en Lenny, die zichzelf spiondetectives noemen en de mysteries van de Vreemdstedeschool proberen op te lossen. Zij zijn immers de enigen die de RILLING kunnen voelen die af en toe op school door de lucht gaat, waarna er ineens vreemde dingen gebeuren, zoals leerlingen die beginnen te dansen, de schoolkippen Mary Poepins en Frida Kakel die in de aanval gaan, de stenen waterspuwers die tot leven komen,… En het vreemde is dat alle leerlingen daarna alles weer vergeten zijn, behalve Agatha en Lenny.
De hoofdstukken worden afwisselend verteld door Agatha en door Lenny, wat ik heel fijn vond, want zo krijg je telkens een andere kijk op de gebeurtenissen. Zo beschouwt Agatha zichzelf als de echte spiondetective die Lenny probeert op te leiden, die nogal een kluns is en zichzelf de held van het verhaal vindt, terwijl Lenny net beweert dat Agatha zijn assistente is. Dat leidt vaak tot grappige misverstanden die dan in het volgende hoofdstuk verduidelijkt worden.
Maar mijn zoon vond dat wisselen van personages net niet tof en heel verwarrend, regelmatig vroeg hij wie van de twee er nu weer aan het woord was en soms moet je inderdaad wel eens terug bladeren naar het begin van het hoofdstuk om te zien vanuit wiens gezichtshoek het beschreven wordt.
Een belangrijk thema in Het raadsel van de boosaardige onderbroeken is ook de vriendschap tussen Agatha en Lenny. Ze zijn eigenlijk heel verschillend maar stiekem beginnen ze elkaar ook wel leuk te vinden. En onder al de humor raakt het boek ongemerkt toch ook wat zwaardere thema’s aan. Lenny’s ouders zijn gescheiden en zijn vader heeft weinig tijd voor hem, het gebeurt regelmatig dat hij een gepland uitstapje met Lenny op het laatste moment afzegt. Lenny fantaseert dan maar dat zijn vader ook een spion is die af en toe op een geheime missie moet vertrekken. Aangezien hij alleen woont met zijn moeder, is zij dan net extra bezorgd over hem wat hij dan soms weer verstikkend vindt.
Agatha daarentegen woont in een groot, chaotisch gezin, ze heeft nog een heleboel jongere broertjes en zusjes waar haar ouders het heel druk mee hebben. Zij heeft vaak het gevoel dat ze niet gezien wordt door haar ouders en zou graag hebben dat ze na schooltijd even een praatje met haar maken en vragen hoe haar dag geweest is.
Wie de boeken van Sam Copeland over Kasper gelezen heeft, weet dat je soms nogal moet zoeken naar de zaken die in de titel vermeld worden. Maar jawel hoor, in dit boek komen op een bepaald moment echt boosaardige onderbroeken voor!

Zeg nou zelf, deze titel klinkt toch heerlijk?
Hij maakte mij nieuwsgierig en toen ik het boek zelf aan het lezen was in mijn klas kwamen de kinderen al snel vragen wanneer zij het boek mochten lezen. Ze waren enthousiast!
Het raadsel van de boosaardige onderbroeken is geschreven door Sam Copeland (die je misschien kent van Kasper wordt een kip) en Jenny Pearson (Razende recordbrekers). Een samenwerking tussen twee auteurs die samen dit soms hilarische verhaal over boosaardige onderbroeken hebben geschreven.
Agatha is een leerling op de Vreemdesteschool. En als snel hebben we in de gaten dat daar zeer vreemde dingen gebeuren. Maar het wordt nog vreemder als Agatha ontdekt dat eigenlijk niemand dat in de gaten heeft behalve zij. Wanneer ze een RILLING voelt, gebeuren er allemaal maffe dingen. Wanneer Lenny nieuw bij hen in de klas komt hebben ze al snel door dat ze een overeenkomst hebben, Lenny voelt de RILLING namelijk ook! Wanneer leerlingen beginnen te dansen, er geschoten wordt met eieren en zelfs gevlogen kan worden besluiten Lenny en Agatha dat ze op onderzoek uit moeten gaan. Gelukkig is Agatha een detective EN een spion, dus dat moet goed komen! Toch?
Het verhaal wordt verteld vanuit de perspectieven van Agatha en Lenny. Deze karakters zijn uniek neergezet en op zijn zachtst gezegd zeer eigenzinnig. Agatha komt uit een groot gezin waar chaos heerst en haar ouders weinig tijd voor haar hebben. Lenny woont alleen met zijn moeder en hoopt elke dag dat zijn vader er is wanneer hij uit school komt, maar zijn vader heeft het druk met zijn spionnen werk.
Het raadsel van de boosaardige onderbroeken is een mysterieus en spannend verhaal waarbij de jeugdige lezer zijn vingers kan aflikken. Humor, spannende en ook hilarische situaties worden beeldend omschreven en samen met Lenny en Agatha gaan ze op zoek naar de reden van de RILLINGEN. Wat hebben meneer Pardon, Dr. Errno en mevr. Wortelbips er mee te maken? En zullen ze erachter komen hoe het zit?
Nieuwsgierig geworden? Duik dan snel tussen de onderbroeken en ik wens je veel leesplezier!

The Underpants of Chaos is a book I was intrigued to read as I've loved all of Sam's books in the past and I was interested in how this book would be with him having paired up with another author who I had not read before.
The story follows Agatha and Lenny who choose to investigate a strange happening in the school where shivers and strange things keep happening. We get to see each of their perspectives through alternating chapters and discover the reason for these strange events.
I wanted to really enjoy this book but I didn't think much of it. I found the writing and story were OK but not so amazing that I'd want to tell everyone about the book like other of Sam's books. I think the book would appeal to children with the silliness of it and the humour within the story but I would have preferred some more serious or realistic topics intertwined within it or something that we could learn from.
The illustrations are nice and it's fun to see what Agatha and Lenny get up to, especially with the more sillier circumstances which make for some fun pictures. Again, they're not my favourite illustrations but I think that's because the story's lacking in my opinion so I don't feel the emotions behind the pictures and it's like they're just there.

Once I got passed the style of the book, it became a very good read. The story was original and funny in places, after all it is a book for nine year olds. Who is behind the shivers at the Strangehaven primary school and what is the reason for such strange happenings? This is the main plot for the story, the main suspects are the headmaster, the librarian and the lady from the automated librarian services...Minerva. Who can it be?
The characterisation for the two main characters are nice and they grow which is rare to find in books for children. It is a lovely read and I could not put the book down.

Ei nyt ihan napakymppi. Lapsi aloitti lukemisen innostuneena itse, mutta kirja jäi lopulta kesken. Luin sen sitten ääneen iltasatuna loppuun, ja näin tuntui uppoavan paremmin. Kirjassa oli ihan hauska idea, mutta se ei kantanut ihan näin pitkän kirjan loppuun asti. Kaksi kertojaääntä oli ihan mielenkiintoinen ratkaisu, mutta välillä minunkin oli vaikea muistaa kumpi sankarikaksikosta oli äänessä. Lapsi tykkäsi enemmän Lennyn luvuista, koska ne olivat hauskempia. Kirjassa olikin muutama kohta joille nauroin ääneen, mutta olisin kaivannut ehkä vielä enemmän hauskuutta. Ei jättänyt kummempia muistijälkiä eikä ainakaan itselleni halua jatkaa sarjan parissa.

Een absurd en humoristisch wegleesboek. Weet je even niet meer waar je in het verhaal was, dan pak je zo de draad weer op.
De titel vind ik wel misleidend: het duurde lang voordat de boosaardige onderbroeken in het verhaal langskwamen en zeker ook niet het hoofdthema.
Hopelijk schrikt de dikte van het boek de gemiddelde lezer niet af. Hoofdstuk 4 voorlezen.
(met daarbij startend op bladzijde 40) zo al voor een mooie introductie van het boek zorgen, waarbij er een een gigantische kippenchaos beschreven wordt.
Exploderende dimensie, leuk voor groep 5 t/m 8

When something weird starts to happen at their school, Agatha and Lenny team up to investigate...
Agatha is already a spy-detective so she is naturally well-placed to figure out what's going on when a mysterious 'shiver' causes all of her classmates to dance wildly and then forget it ever happened. Lenny has tried a lot of different things, in a lot of different schools, (his mum is sure he'll find his thing eventually) so he's happy to give investigating a try - particularly as he and Agatha seem to be the only ones who notice the shiver and remember its effects afterwards. 3.5 rounded up. An entertaining read that my 5 year old enjoyed, and I got into as well. A nice back and forth between two perspectives with some fun nonsense along the way.

Long story about two kid detectives and the book of chaos!! Funny in places. My son enjoyed it but I felt it was a bit long. Not bad though 4/5!

Another read with the kids another massive hit from Sam Copeland, his books are utterly ridiculous and hilarious and loved equally by both kids and adults in our household 😅🥰

I already love Sam Copeland and Jenny Pearson books so when I found out they had teamed up for a book, I couldn't wait. Thankfully it absolutely lives up to all expectations- a great story, fun characters and lots of laugh out loud moments!
A great story about friendship and when Lenny and Agatha team up to solve a mystery of the shivers that only they remember at school it brings lots of laughs along the way, along with some strange situations!!

Agatha, takes new boy Lenny under her wing when she realises that they both feel the shivers. The shivers lead to some sort of chaos being unleashed in the school. Investigator Agatha and Lenny begin to search for clues in this funny, witty book. The shivers lead them down some silly paths and the humour is very childlike, but even I giggled. the under current of the book which I didn't realise until the end, is quite humbling.
