Buckle up for the adventure and discover how you also can be healed of an orphan spirit mindset and live in your full identity as a child of God.
What a beautifully heartwarming story this was to read. Trials and tribulations of adopting children from another country resonate throughout the book. The memoir was kind of written in two parts the first had to do with adopting a child from overseas. Many bridges had to crossed but Sandra managed to cross all of them. The second part took us through the adoption process which is no easy task. The one thing I kept thinking about throughout reading the whole story is what is going on in Sandra's mind now that the Ukraine is under fire from Russia.
Only God can write such an amazing story. I loved reading this book. Her family's adoption journey reads almost reads like fiction - I wish I could read in one sitting, but my busy days only allowed me to read a little bit at a time. And I couldn't wait for another break so I could read! It is so well-written. I could imagine how she tried to let the Holy Spirit speak to her initially reluctant husband (as many of us adoptive moms have!) And I could feel the frigid air as they waited in the car. Shouldn't spoil too much, but this really is a good story-telling. And throughout the whole book, the author's faith shines through. When you are obedient to the Lord, He continues to surprise you - in a good way! The verses she quotes are gems that I could treasure. Chapter 25 is something else altogether for me. God adopts us. But the former status of "spiritually orphan" identity lingers for a while. But just like her children, slowly, He heals us and we can rejoice in our identity as a true child of God and an heir. Read this book and let the love of God sink in.
As a first time author, Sandra Flach has taken the reader where very few have take us: into the true heart of the international adoption process. This heartwrenching, yet triumphant true story drew me in as I shared in the shady and insane rollercoaster ride that all to often exemplifies the "business" of third world orphanages and adoption. We as Christians are called to pereservere in prayer; the power and evidence of this is shown over and over again throughout their journey. The book is in two parts: the first being the actual work to receive the children into their home, the second shows the beautiful parallel between this physical adoption and how each of us are adopted into the family of our Heavenly Father. Beautifully written, I would recommend this book to anyone interested in a good true adventure story, adoption, and how God sees us as adopted sons and daughters. I will read this again!
Beautiful testimony to God's hand in the Flach's journey to adoption, finding their kids, bringing them home, and healing and growing together. The end part of the book explains how many of, without the experience of adoption, foster care, or orphanages also struggle with the same orphaned spirit in our own lives that we see manifest in the lives of kids from hard places. This idea of my own orphaned heart has been such a place of revelation and a place God is healing. Flach's treatment of the topic was much more cursory than Janet Helms' in her book "Healing the Orphaned Heart" that I would recommend as a follow-up to anyone who wants more information and more concrete info on where to go from here.
I was spellbound by the process Sandra and her family went through to adopt internationally. Full of trials and tribulations, all turned over to the Lord, attested to the faith and determination required to do the work of God. Great read!
Sandra does a beautiful job at breaking down the barriers between the reader and her family. I felt every pang of hopelessness, frustration, panic and love she felt while on the journey to bring her children home. The story is a testament to how love conquering the hardest of hurdles, but not being afraid to ask for help too.
