Graphically and conceptually. I see a lot of people talking about excessive sex and profanity but the same people don't make the same remarks about the physical violence. Not that I'm especially shocked about it but considering the percentage of both I'd say violence wins.(less)

I'd recomment Ghostopolis by Doug TenNapel, and the Leviathan series by Scott Westerfeld (this one isn't a comic but does have a lot of art and illustration which makes it kind of a hybrid). I haven't read Bone but I hear it's also pretty epic in scale while being very kid-friendly. A lot of retailers also break down their graphic novels by target age so you could check there.(less)
