Hey Hey, It's World Book Day!

Posted by Danny on April 23, 2017

Celebrated in more than 100 countries, World Book Day is, you guessed it, a worldwide event devoted to our universal love of authors, books, illustrators, and reading. Across the globe, World Book Day occurs on April 23, which just happens to be the day historians believe Shakespeare was born (coincidentally, it was also the date of his death). The purpose of the holiday is to encourage young people to read and help provide them the means to do so.

Help More People Discover a Love of Reading
There are so many great charities that promote reading literacy and learning (see our featured list here), and today Amazon is contributing to several of them, including Worldreader, Room to Read, and First Book. Find out how you can help.

Share the Love
To mark the occasion, we thought we'd share some of our most beloved visual quotes about reading. Feel free to share them with the hashtag #LoveToRead.

Mariangel Adding to the opening post: the Book Day celebration started in Spain in 1923, and became an event officially designated by the king in 1926. April 23 was chosen because it was the date of the death of Cervantes and also of Shakespeare.

The teachers made a big deal of this day when I was in school. It was a very fun day! Even nowadays, books are discounted and many people gift books to their loved ones on April 23 in Spain.

What a lovely holiday and a progressive way to celebrate! Thank you, Spain and Mariangel. Wish the US had done that - we might be better off if we had!
