LadyS I absolutely ADORE Beverly clearly books. I read them multiple times as a child! I am now an adult and I still enjoy reading books about Ramona Quimby!

message 3: by Elena (new)

Elena Ramona Quimby is one of those characters that all little girls want to be. After reading about her I drew massive murals or whole worlds, made tin can stilts, used the front hall closet as an elevator and countless other things, though thankfully I never fell through a ceiling. Beverly Cleary books were my childhood.

So true! :-D

Allison Henry Huggins was the first series I binge read and Ramona was so annoying in those books to me that, no matter how people tried, I initially refused to read the Ramona books. I gave in and read Beezus and Ramona and thought "There! that proves my point! She is an annoying girl that gives little sisters a bad name!" I refused to read any more but boy, did I love those Henry Huggins books! :)

Megan When I was growing up I read nearly everything by Beverly Cleary. She was my favorite author as a kid. My favorite series was (and still is!) Ramona. I was a little sister and could relate to everything Ramona went through. I still get them out occasionally and pretend like I'm a kid again.

Happy Birthday, Beverly Cleary!

message 28: by QNPoohBear (new)

QNPoohBear Happy Birthday to an amazing and wonderful woman! I just saw a half-hour special about her on PBS. One of the first chapter books I remember reading (after the Little House books) was Ramona Quimby Age 8. That one and Ramona the Brave were my favorites. When my niece started listening to one of the books, I remembered Susan with the boing, boing curls; Howie the "yard ape" and "the dawnzer." I think Ramona appeals to kids because she's so real.

I also liked Ralph S. Mouse and remember dressing up as a mouse with a helmet for favorite book character day at school in 3rd grade. (I guess I couldn't be Laura Ingalls every year and Ramona was too ambiguous).

message 29: by Angela (new)

Angela Ramona The Brave and Ramona the Pest were my two favorites! I'm so sad I can't find my Ramona books any more they were my favorite childhood books!

message 30: by Ivonne (new)

Ivonne Rovira I adored these books in the long ago. And as a little girl with the name Ivonne who really, really wanted a license plate with her name on it for her bicycle, I really identify with this quote: "Didn't the people who made those license plates care about little girls named Ramona?"

message 41: by Kari (new)

Kari Burke Socks was the very first chapter book I ever read. I loved all of Beverly Cleary's books growing up. I am a home schooling mother of 5 now and her books are even more fun now that I am sharing them with my own children. We read each of them aloud and I have literally laughed so hard I couldn't continue reading and teared up so that I've had to take a minute to compose myself. Clearly's stories are truly a valuable and precious part of childhood in my opinion.

My children's favorite Ramona adventure was when she was banished from the family tube of toothpaste.

message 42: by Jeff (new)

message 44: by Allison (new)

Allison Beverly Cleary's children's books were an integral part of my childhood. She effectively tackles the ups and downs of growing up in a wholesome style that never grows old. On behalf of the past, present and future generations of readers in my family, thank you, Ms. Cleary, for gifting us with your wonderful books. :)

message 45: by Melissa (new)

Melissa I remember reading "Ramona the Pest" over and over again. Later, I found other Beverly Cleary books at the library. I bought all of Ms. Cleary's books for my own children to enjoy. Now that they are grown up/older, I hope that they will pass the books on to their own children. Thank you, Ms. Cleary, for writing the books that started my love of reading.

message 46: by Amy (new)

Amy Large I'm a baby-boomer and grew up on Ramona and Beezus plus all BC's other characters. I still use some of my favorite Ramona phrases, such as "we're scrimping and pinching to make ends meet"! We often laugh about Beezus's hair-do, Ramona's bluing disaster, the Quimby's pancake disaster and the unplugged crockpot plus so many other hilarities from those books. THANK YOU, Beverly Cleary, for adding so much richness to my life and my children's lives.

message 47: by Amy (last edited Apr 13, 2016 11:32AM) (new)

Amy Large I'm not sure anyone has mentioned one of my favorite Beverly Cleary characters, Ellen Tibbits! I read that book dozens of times and can still picture Ellen leaping and clutching (her long underwear) AND pulling the HUGE beet out of the mud in the rain. LOVE THAT BOOK.
