Goodreads Now Available on the New Kindle Paperwhite

Posted by Otis Chandler on November 18, 2013
Picture it: You're curled up on the couch, lost in a fantastic story on your new Kindle Paperwhite, when you come across the most amazing passage. It sends shivers down your spine... or it makes you laugh... or it captures something important to you. And you can't wait to see if your friends feel the same way. Now there's no need to put down your new Kindle Paperwhite to jump on Goodreads and share it with your friends...

Starting today, Goodreads is inside your books on the new Kindle Paperwhite. Reading and discussing books are no longer separated—your reading experience is all on one device!

It's long been a dream of ours to bring Goodreads inside your Kindle and into the book with you. The team has been working long and hard to make this possible and we can't wait to show you the results today.

Let's take a tour!

Thanks again to the Goodreads team who built this—they put in a lot of late nights and ate a lot of giant burritos! After a well-earned rest, they'll be back at work building a new wave of features both on Kindle and on Goodreads.com.

Goodreads is available in a free, over-the-air software update delivered automatically to new Kindle Paperwhites in the US, Canada and Australia in the coming weeks. Can't wait for the update? You can also go here to download it. We do not have details to share about other Kindle e-readers but know that Amazon has a long history of bringing new features to previous devices.

Which feature in Goodreads on the new Kindle Paperwhite appeals to you the most?

Sharon I love my new Paperwhite I got for Christmas, but I was just wondering can I chart my progress in the book I am reading in it like I could before with my Nook?

message 202: by Olya (new)

Olya I'd be the happiest person ever if this facility was also available for my 1st generation Kindle!

Jason Follow (Message #206), the latest update extends these features to 1st Generation. Just make sure the device is not on Airplane

I am not finding a way to update my 1st gen paperwhite to access Goodreads. Am I missing something?

I don't have the 1st generation of Kindle Paperwhite (2012) model, but according to the manual, you should:

1) tap the menu button from the home screen;
2) tap the "Update your Kindle" option - which would be dimmed if there wasn't any available.

Tip: Restart your Kindle first by depressing the power button for 7 seconds.

Good luck.

I'm looking forward to this feature being available in Japan soon, and no doubt other Kindle users are too in other countries.

message 207: by Jason (new)

Jason It seems that goodreads integration is not geography oriented. It is just that 1st generation Kindle Paperwhite current updates is only 5.3.9 and doesn't include this feature yet.

Apparently, installing the 5.4.x update designed for the 2nd generation Kindle Paperwhite will not work either.

Good(reads) things comes to those who wait... Sorry.

message 208: by Lynn Renee (new)

Lynn Renee thank you for the information, readings a previous post made me think there was a 1st gen paperwhite update. I thought that was awfully fast

Well, unfortunately, this option is dimmed on my Kindle, although I have 5.3 version... Anyway, thanks!

Sharon I love my new Paperwhite I got for Christmas, but I was just wondering can I chart my progress in the book I am reading in it like I could before with my Nook? I also wonder does the Paperwhite have a "night mode" where the background is dark and the text is white to read better in bed?

There's no night mode unfortunately. Saving progress like the nook, I'll leave others to do because I havent had a Nook to understand.

message 215: by Lily (new)

Lily Bishop If the kindle paperwhite is linked to a different email address than the goodreads account, can they still be integrated? (My kindle is under my real name, my goodreads is under my pen name since I'm an author)

message 216: by Jason (new)

Jason Yes. It uses standard authentication to link in (as in you provide the PW your username and password). But I think it's only one goodread account linkage at a time.

message 217: by Jason (new)

Jason I think the integration doesn't go deep enough. For example, I can't add what I find in the Kindle Store on my Paperwhite to my 'want to read' Goodreads list, I can't add from that list, to my Amazon wish list and I can't update my progress status in Goodreads based on where I'm at in Kindle Paperwhite. Interestingly, I can go from my goodreads list to finding it on the Kindlestore.

In any event, the limited bi-directional integration (despite both being owned by Amazon, means it's not such a compelling reason to upgrade from Kindle PW 1st generation (2012) to 2nd generation (2013).

message 218: by Pamela (new)

Pamela I have the Kindle Paperwhite, but the option to access Goodreads by tapping "g" on my Kindle is not available. ???

message 219: by Ale (new)

Ale Once your device updated to the latest firmware, you should reboot your device. It should be there after the reboot. Please note this feature is only available on the second generation of paperwhite at the moment.

Ann I keep checking to see if it is there but no luck yet.

message 222: by Pam (last edited Feb 06, 2014 04:05AM) (new)

Pam I join the THRONG...calling for this wonderful little gizmo to be available on OTHER KINDLE PAPERWHITE. We bought ours in JUNE 2013...but I just discovered that the Goodreads connection ONLY works with an upgrade to 5.4 Kindle system which ONLY comes on the '2nd Generation'(available Oct 2013). SOMEONE _ shake Amazon. The world of reading is NOT just for making money...give us ALL access to Goodreads through out Kindle eReaders!!! Please.

Anne Monteith Michelle wrote: "I have last year's Paperwhite as well and now I finally see a reason to upgrade!"

Wait until April, they are supposed to release a new generation then.

message 224: by Pam (new)

Pam ...yes but ...there is nothing particularly WRONG with my current Paperwhite. The little light 'shadow' didn't bother me enough to forgo getting it in the first place. But I appreciate your point and I may have to follow you. Sigh

message 225: by Anne (new)

Anne Monteith I just have a touch mow. I had the fire, but after having to return it 5 times for the same problem, but am planning to get the PW just as soon as it as upgraded.

message 226: by Barbara (new)

Barbara I have a Kindle Touch and love it. I don't want to get the paperwhite but I use the Goodreads apt. I do hope you will roll out this update for older devices.

message 227: by Pam (new)

Pam I think we ALL are in agreement that we like that little Goodreads app and WANT IT...on whatever Kindle we have...so GOODREADS TEAM _ are you reading these!! I hope so. Good luck on the 'new' modifications for all us.

message 228: by Marie (new)

Marie Deremiah This absolutely should be an upgrade offered on Kindle! I too have last year's PaperWhite. I have purchased 5 Kindles and turned MANY people onto Kindle. It starts to seem a little absurd to have to buy new for what should be an upgrade to customers. I have LOVED my Kindles and Amazon should appreciate my business (and others) and offer this software upgrade to us.

A Foxtrotter Reads Goodreads and 3G on the new Paperwhite, I can't wait!

message 230: by Gyldaine (new)

Gyldaine will it be available to kindle paperwhite FIRST generation? because as of now,it's only available in kindle paperwhite SECOND generation

message 231: by Pam (last edited Feb 07, 2014 01:05AM) (new)

Pam Glydaine...NO! Go back up the previous posts. THAT is the hew and cry here because it apprears it is for 2nd generation and we are all SENDING A MESSAGE to GOODREADS/AMAZON and the message is: Give us a break, people, we're looking for some Customer Cred! :-]

message 232: by Quinlin (new)

Quinlin Fischer forget Goodreads, I can't get books or games I bought on my old keyboard kindle to transfer to my paperwhite kindle! I spent 2 hours on phone with Amazon, and they don't even recognize my old purchases. Also I can't figure out how to go back and forth in a book, or get back to where I left off if granddaughter gets hold of my kindle. I guess I'm just not techy enough.

message 233: by Plethora (last edited Feb 07, 2014 09:39PM) (new)

Plethora Quinlin - One of the biggest reasons that pops up with not finding previous purchase is somehow creating a second account.

For some reason it seems possible to create a second account with the same email put a slightly different password without realizing it.

As for the games, I can't be sure if the ones that worked on the Kindle Keyboard also work on the Paperwhite. I never had any of those.

message 234: by Pam (new)

Pam ohhh, Quinlin, I feel your pain (as they say!). I do find Amazon difficult to deal with. I am so impressed that you actually SPOKE ON THE PHONE with someone. Per this chain regarding getting the Gr app on a very limited range of eReaders gives just a peek at the frustration so you're in good company but it also sounds like Bookworm R has the patience of Job to have figured things out! My view, its us against the automated responses/data bases/call centers in India!

message 235: by Jane (new)

Jane Oh enough about the new paperwhite! Either we get the app on the old one or we don't. Just shut up about it. I'm done!

message 236: by Luigi (new)

Luigi That's very cool, I've just ordered a Paper White for my birthday:)

message 237: by Jason (new)

Jason Is there a Timer app on the Kindle Paperwhite? I am looking for something that would operate in the background, but would pop up in the foreground after a set amount time of reading, a set time, or whatever other designation the developer might think of (set % progress etc). I can't seem to find one as yet.

message 238: by Jason (new)

Jason @Fernando and @Evelyn, your queries are valid and this is one of my surprises, that there is insufficient integration back and forth between Amazon and Goodreads.

For example, you can update the books you've purchased on Amazon to Goodreads, but you can't update your reading progress (in terms of percentages complete) automatically or manually from your Kindle PW as a status on your Goodreads.

You can however:
1) mark a book as either "read", "to read" or "currently reading" on your Goodreads account via the Kindle PW.
2) create an independent "collection" calling it whatever you want, and then mark a book that is in your Kindle PW to be in any number of collections. But that is manual and it can have multiple marks, so that if you sort by collection, it can appeal multiple times. Also, it's not integrated into your collection on your Goodreads Profile.

This is no doubt just the first few baby steps taken under the collaboration between the Goodreads and Kindle team. I hope they are reading this post and putting these suggestions on their product roadmap!

message 239: by Luigi (new)

Luigi There seems to be inconsistency in functionality on the iOS apps too which is really frustrating. I mostly use my laptop even though I can't scan from it, just because the full browser version gives me the most functionality. As well as remembering what I have read, I also use GoodReads as a catalogue of the books I own, both for purposes of building collections of physical books and for insurance purposes if the need ever arose. I doubt an insurance company would believe how many books I own if I didn't have a physical record.

Not as worried about what I can do on the Kindle, because obviously things like book condition etc aren't relevant for eBooks.

I agree. One Amazon account can have multiple kindles on it, and each kindle owner will want his or her own goodreads account. Goodreads accounts should be associated with one or more devices, not the amazon account.

Yes! What Angela said.

I'm currently a college student, so I don't exactly have the cash to upgrade from my Kindle Touch to the Paper white. However, I do try to keep up with my goodreads through my Android App.

Still, if you guys could make this work for the Kindle Touch, I know A LOT of people who would be REALLY grateful. Myself included. :D

message 242: by Christian Jess (new)

Christian Jess Mark As others have stated, I see no reason why it's only 2nd generation paperwhite that gets this update.

message 247: by Piotr (new)

Piotr Grabiec Ok, finally today the Kindle PW1 got the Goodreads integrations, but I am kinda dissapointed! I love Goodreads, but from Kindle I can't update % reading progress and still have to pull smartphone from my pocket to do that. Is there any chance for update of Goodreads on Kindle PW1/2 in near future, that would enable this feature?

Also, when I share from book transfered to Kindle as Personal Docs (can't buy polish books from Amazon, we are still waiting for Amazon.pl you know) the source is Anonymous. Is there a chance, that in future it will be syncing book from Personal Docs with book added from smartphone/web to Goodreads account?

That's outstanding, Amanda! Will you publish the link here for the rest of us 1st gen users? I know that I'd be very appreciative, and I'm sure others would, too! --Jane

Piotr Grabiec Here you are:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/custome...
You have to download the .bon file, transfer it via USB to your Kindle PW1, press menu button on the homescreen, select settings, press menu button again and finally select "update your Kindle" option. It could take a couple on mins.
