The Goodreads Mobile Site Gets a Facelift—Grab Your Smartphones!

Posted by Otis Chandler on October 21, 2013
More and more, mornings look like this: The alarm rings, you sit up, sleepily grasp for your smartphone, and scroll through your news and updates. According to industry analysts, by 2015 more people will access the web via mobile devices than desktops. And of course, Goodreads is no different. In September, traffic to our mobile web site was up 150 percent from last year, with most of that coming from smartphone users. Now we’re rolling out a beta mobile version of Goodreads.com that we think makes navigation on a smartphone easier and more intuitive! When you visit Goodreads.com on your smartphone’s web browser, you’ll see the new mobile site as soon as you sign in. (On tablets, you will continue to see the familiar desktop version for now.)

To give you a feel for the new look of the mobile web site, check out these fun screenshots:

Some of the improvements to look forward to include:
  • More organized and easier-to-browse view of your books
  • Simple view of your friends’ updates and what they are reading
  • A cleaner and more useful presentation of book information

This is a beta version and we’re working on adding more mobile-optimized pages in the future, so please stay tuned.

Just to recap, all you have to do to see the new beta site is visit Goodreads.com on your smartphone. Enjoy!

Martin L. Cahn Question: will you be updating your mobile apps (iPhone, in my case) to match this?

James Beltz Great! Look forward to seeing it soon.

Natasha (Diarist) Holme Is this for all smartphones? Windows smartphones, which I use, often get overlooked.

Yes, that's a project we plan on doing soon.

It should work on all smartphones that use a modern browser. We'd love feedback on how it looks on various phones as we only have a handful of test devices in the office.

BRILLIANT. Thank you, Otis :-)

Tom Fredericson My first encounter with your website was its use as a source of racist quotes by Lyndon Johnson(here: http://www.goodreads.com/author/quote...). I'm responding here because there was no way to report these as abuse. Your site is being used as confirmation of these false quotes, apparently for quite some time. You need to take care of this.

HeatherIlene That looks great! I'm happy to hear about the updates because, while I really enjoy Goodreads and the convenience of using the mobile app, it's definitely clunky in spots. Especially in regards to the "groups" section. Can't wait to try out the new app!

Dee Baig That’s really great. We all know that smartphone usage continues to climb. According to a report, three out of five mobile subscribers in the U.S owned a smartphone and this is what made mobile surpassed the PC as the main way to access web. As far as goodreads.com is concerned, it is considered as one of the largest websites for readers and book recommendations. So it’s an important update from goodreads to the Android users and book readers like me.

Tanya Keep the app updates/improvements coming. Would really love to see more options in the Groups section, specifically the Bookshelf list. We reference our upcoming reads in our book club all the time and would love to have the app show this!
