Readers Also Enjoyed...

Posted by Brian on May 27, 2011
Goodreads is a wonderful community of readers who help each other find great books to read. So far, it's been primarily though seeing each each other's bookshelves, reviews and by directly recommending books to one another.

But we're also hard at work at finding ways to use everyone's ratings, reviews and other data we have about our books to make great personalized recommendations.

We've released the first step in that direction! On the book page we're now showing books that many users who read the book you're looking at also enjoyed. In the right column on the book page, you may see Readers Also Enjoyed (note that not all books will have them if we don't have enough data for them). Also note that there are arrow links near the top for paging through the books for quicker access:

We're working on making these suggestions even better, so continue to check back on your favorite books. We'll soon be using these books to give you personalized recommendations for the books that you've enjoyed, so stay tuned!

Ming Is this feature related to the blog post of 3/10/11 on book discoverability? good start... needs to get more rigorous... At this time, this feels like what Amazon does -- a rough approximation of related books, e.g., based on setting, on first-tier genre, similarity of book title, etc.

Jessica While I like what you're working on to show what other readers are interested in, I'd really like an option to purposely link to a similar book. Each review I post, I also post, if you liked "some book" you will probably like this one as well. I find the auto-generators sometimes leave a gap in helping you find something other than those titles that are, or were, hugely popular or fairly recent.

Elizabeth☮ i like this idea and i think it will help connect to authors that are unknown or new.

Ming Since my comment a month ago, you've really improved this feature. It's a bit quirky at times structure-wise and also some of the books listed (which I've read) are a far-stretch. But please keep working on it!
