Explore Books by Genre!

Posted by M on April 05, 2011
Looking for that next great read? Have very specific tastes? Our new genre pages may be just what you need.

We'll show you new releases, hot trends, authors you've read, and popular books! Browse as if in a bookstore, but with the extra benefits of checking the star rating and adding the book to your to-read list right then and there.

You can search for something as general as fiction or as specific as zombies. In non-fiction, read about parenting, military history, or vegan cooking. Our categories are organized in a hierarchy, so you can navigate from the sub-genres section to your area of interest.

We've also got related giveaways, quizzes, videos, lists, groups, and even author interviews.

So how do we decide what books fit into what category? The answer is: we don't. The new genre pages use crowd-sourced information from your bookshelves. So when you create shelves like "memoir" or "politics", you're actually helping us categorize books and creating a richer experience on the genre pages.

View your all your favorite genres! From parenting to zombies, there's something for everyone. Get started on your favorite below:

Hover over a book cover to find the star rating and add it to your to-read list!

Navigate to your interests using the sub-genres section.

You can also find new releases by authors you've read.

Check out author interviews and other insider goodies!

Janelle Excellent, keep on keeping on Goodreads! Love this site. :)

Diabolical Daemonic Nice :D

message 3: by Diana (new)

Diana it sounds great but if it's going off of what shelf people put a book in, it might be weird since I've seen a lot of books marked as "young adult" but are actually not meant to be read by younger readers

message 4: by Kerry (new)

Kerry I just took a quick glance, but so far I LOVE IT :)!!! Thank you!!!!!! I think I will use this alot!

message 5: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa Keep on truckin' with the good work Goodreads :D

Dawn Thanks for another wonderful improvement! It will make book browsing more fun than ever.

message 8: by Vicky (new)

Vicky N. Wow. You guys just keep on amazing me. I can't wait to start exploring!

message 9: by Craig (new)

Craig a.k.a Meatstack I wonder then: So my shelves are more meta data than genre...example: "Borrowed from Steve" or "audiobook" ...are you filtering for a specific key word? Should users attempt to standardize their shelf names? i.e. Science Fiction vs. Sci Fi vs. SF

message 10: by rivka, librarian moderator (new)

rivka Craig, librarians are linking shelves to genres. So science-fiction and scifi and SF are all linked as synonymous. And "borrowed from Steve" (and similarly unique-to-one-user shelves) will be ignored and not placed in the genre hierarchy.

message 11: by Craig (new)

Craig a.k.a Meatstack Awesome. thanks for the explanation!

✿ℎazℯℓ - thℯ ℛock Cℎick ℱairy✿ Spectacular feature! thank you very much. This is very useful and fun to use. ^_^

message 13: by Kellee (new)

Kellee Love the new feature!
Question though: When you are looking at a book information page, is there any way to see what genre it has been tagged as?

message 14: by Vidya (new)

Vidya The new feature sounds amazing!!!
Keep up the good work guys!!!
Love this site!

message 15: by Becca (new)

message 19: by Eden (new)

Eden Awesome :)

message 21: by Booklover (new)

Booklover Thanks

GR is excellent site i m so glad i joined it

message 22: by Tatiana (new)

Tatiana I love the idea, but even after taking a glimpse at a Young Adult section, I can see many books were miscategorized. I doubt anyone on GR would classify Lover Unleashed as YA.

message 23: by rivka, librarian moderator (new)

rivka Actually, two people have it shelved as young-adult.

message 24: by Tess (new)

Tess Thanks. GR is absolutely amazing site and this is great idea! :)

message 25: by Tatiana (new)

Tatiana rivka wrote: "Actually, two people have it shelved as young-adult."

Rivka, does it mean the program recognizes every shelf a book is put on, even if if only 2 people out of thousands classified it as such? Seems like it opens up a lot of room for error. A lot.

message 26: by rivka, librarian moderator (new)

rivka There has been some discussion of thresholds (IIRC, we were talking about a minimum of three or five), but implementing them is difficult, as I understand it.

message 27: by Amanda (new)

Amanda I think this is a great idea! Thanks!

message 28: by Bark (new)

Bark Thank you GoodReads! I've been hoping for a feature like this since I joined the site. It's going to make it so much easier to keep up with my favorite author's and genres now.

message 29: by Emma (new)

Emma rivka wrote: "Actually, two people have it shelved as young-adult."

But that doesn't make it any less wrong. :/

message 30: by Amanda (new)

Amanda I'm sure they'll get the bugs worked out, but over all, this is still helpful.

message 31: by rivka, librarian moderator (new)

rivka Emma, the trouble with these things is that they are a matter of opinion. I agree with you on that particular book -- but clearly not everyone does.

message 32: by Sharon (new)

Sharon What a great feature!!!! Thank you!!

message 33: by Sandi (new)

Sandi Thank you! A much needed feature I am sure to use!

message 34: by [deleted user] (new)

oooooooooohhhhhhhhhhh!sounds good

message 35: by Jed (new)

Jed So I was going to try and suggest that yo guys add tooltip to books that display the summary, because it's tedious to have to "Judge a book by its cover." Then I found this post, two things about the hover functionality, first, more summary text! Second, do it on all the pages that display covers with no info, like the popular page and other not just on Genres?

message 36: by Kristine (new)

Kristine Excellent! I'm really excited about this.

message 37: by Hannah (new)

Hannah G Nice!

message 38: by Nyssa (new)

Nyssa Very nice! Thank you. :)

message 39: by Jill (last edited Apr 06, 2011 04:30PM) (new)

Jill Hutchinson Great new feature.....thanks.
I think you might want to add "The Golden Age" to your mystery genre for those of us who enjoy the classic books from those years.

message 40: by rivka, librarian moderator (new)

rivka Jill, someone would need to create a shelf with that name and shelve many books on it for it to work.

message 41: by Cait (new)

Yeah, I have a LOT of stuff tagged Childhood because that's when I read it... but it was not age-appropriate.

✿❤~m49913~❤✿ AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

maybedeathisagift GREAT feature!

message 50: by Aaron (new)

Aaron Neat feature, though there's a bit of overlap on functionality for shelves, for me. Always like new ways to browse, though, so this is cool.
