Introducing Friend Suggestions
One thing I love about Goodreads is connecting with other members with a similar tastes in books. Our new Friend Suggestions tool should make this easier for everyone.
The tool will suggest friends based on friends in common as well as books in common. The books in common part is exciting because it promotes something that I think Goodreads excels at: connecting members with each other based on reading preferences.
If the tool suggests a member you're just not interested in adding, simply click the 'X' at the top right of the box and you'll never have to see that suggestion again.
Not excited about Friend Suggestions at all? Click the "hide" link at the top right of the Friend Suggestions box to hide the module from your homepage. This step can be reversed in your account settings.

The addition of the books in common does elevate this feature over services like Twitter or Facebook in my opinion. But honestly I like that it can be toggled on/off as desired.

Where is the friends suggestion box supposed to show? I can't find it at all.
how does this work I have clicked X and pictures even Fbook !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
To access Friends Suggestions box you will need to turn off your pop-up blocker.
My popup blocker is always off for goodreads, so that's not the issue. Where exactly is the friends suggestion box supposed to pop up?
Friend suggestion should be on your homepage, on the right, underneath your status. I like this friends suggestion a lot. I've added several new friends over the past week, plus add in the book comparison and then I get to see how similar the new friends are to my tastes. Great features!

Oh, I just noticed my friends box has disappeared too. I think it has appeared and disappeared few times for me...not sure?
Yay! I have been hoping for something like this. I seem to have run out of real life friends that are interested in Goodreads and was looking for an easier way to find people with common interests and taste. Unfortunately I can't see it on my page. I have friend suggestions based on friends in common, but none based on books in common. The pop up blocker is not the issue. Hope to get this working soon!
For people who can't see the Friends Suggestions box on the right side of the homepage, our script has probably not populated your suggestions yet. One way to speed this along is to approve a pending friend request if you have one. Then it takes about a day or two for your other suggestions to populate.

Thanks for the info. I'll watch for that! Another thing that would be fun is to have book suggestions based on books we have read and rated highly. Find others who rated it highly and which books most commonly show up among those readers as also highly rated.
Wow, I'm so excited about this!! This is actually the main reason I had looked into goodreads in the first place, and now it's being added. Yay! Now I just need to get it working... heh heh. :]

My pop up blocker is not on, I have friends, and I even tried a different browser. Help!
Oops, sorry Ashley, but you've helped me find a bug. The bug's preventing you from seeing the suggestions. I've put in a fix for it, so you should be good to go after the next release, which should be in a day or so. Thanks!

I'm a bit late to this conversation but I don't see the friend suggestion link on my homepage either. I can click the link at the beginning of this thread but it says there are no suggestions for me at this time. :(
Zach, you'll have to have more than 1 friend to have friend suggestions generated for you. Kind of counter-intuitive, but it's the only way we can generate enough suggestions.
Thanks for the explanation, Louise. I assumed the suggestions would be based on my book, author, and genre preferences. If they're based on my current friends, I'm not so sure how accurate they'll be. I might have lot's of friends whose tastes in books are very different from my own. I guess I'll have to find a second friend to see how accurate the suggestions are!:)
I hate to practice threadomancy, but I can't find this feature either. I have friends and have switched on the option in my settings. Am I missing something?
Is this thing still working? I don't have any friends suggestions, but over 100 rated books :(
Has this feature been removed? Any plans to add it back?
