The true-crime genre is experiencing a huge boom, and it comes as no surprise—podcasts, documentaries, and TV shows have us all addicted to learning about the darkest and most labyrinthine excesses of the human psyche.

Plenty of fresh, exhaustively researched pieces have populated our shelves these past few years. Readers have fixated on harrowing, fascinating accounts of cult compound murdersIvy League bludgeonings, and a notorious killer who was finally captured after three decades due in part to the tireless work of the book's author.

Below is a collection of the biggest and most popular true-crime books of the past five years, which we gathered based on Goodreads members' additions to their Want to Read shelves. Scroll over the covers below to learn more about each book, and be sure to add the books that pique your interest to your Want to Read shelf!

Ngân Thu American sherlock, American heiress, All-American murder, a true story of rape in America, American fire, American Kingpin, American predator. Seems like there’s a pattern here.

Desii I loved American Predator: The Hunt for the Most Meticulous Serial Killer of the 21st Century. Very interesting but also very disturbing Story.
I also enjoy thre books by Christopher Berry-Dee. For example the book: Talking with Serial Killers: The Most Evil People in the World Tell Their Own Stories. I have a lot more in my want to read list like "I'll be gone in the dark" or "Killer across the table" and i am so ready to read them!

Carmen IMO, Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI deserves a place on this list, though i haven't read them all.

Jezzy ever since i listened to Serial's 1st season about Adnan Syed's case years ago, that was my introduction in listening to the true crime genre podcast. i should add Adnan's Story: The Search for Truth and Justice After Serial on my TBR list.

Totally agree!

Douglas Schofield Okay, I guess it's too recently released, but this one is flying of the shelves and the publisher is now planning a second print run of the hardcover: "GIOVANNI'S RING - My Life Inside The Real Sopranos," by Giovanni Rocco. This is the FBI undercover who recently spent 3 years working his way into that N.J. crime family. (Full disclosure: I'm Giovanni's co-author.) Hoping to see it in the next version of this list!

Rada I really liked American Kingpin and I'll be gone in the dark.
