56 of the Most Anticipated Young Adult Books of 2021

Posted by Sharon on January 1, 2021

Gothic romance, dueling family restaurants, West African magic, and much, much more! It sure looks like 2021 is shaping up to be a year of spectacular young adult reading. Among the most anticipated books in fantasy are Leigh Bardugo's return to Ravka in Rule of Wolves and Ciannon Smart's hot debut, Witches Steeped in Gold. If realism is more your speed, then you might want to take a little trip down memory lane with Maverick Carter in Angie Thomas' Concrete Rose.

To create our list of the year's must-read young adult fiction, we focused on what Goodreads members can't wait to read. How do we measure that anticipation? By looking at how many times a book has been added to Want to Read shelves. We also factored in the reaction (and reviews) of early readers. We then sorted them by fantasy and sci-fi versus contemporary and historical novels.

Which of these upcoming releases are making their way onto your Want to Read shelf? Share your thoughts with us in the comments!

message 12: by Jana (new)

Jana A trend I've noticed quite a bit on Goodreads across genres? PLEASE stop opening book descriptions with "Book X" meets "Book Y" in this new YA novel by...as an avid reader, nothing bothers me more...and discourages me from reading more about the book than opening a description by comparing it to other books, series, or authors. Tell us about the book FIRST...then throw in the comparisons later. Let the new release stand on its own before you weigh it down with comparisons to existing works!

PS...excited to see what kind of trouble Stevie Bell gets into in Truly Devious #4...and continuing the journey in Good Girl, Bad Blood!

I agree. I've read books where they've had such descriptions and ended up feeling disappointed because my expectations were high. I usually don't see these comparisons as helpful unless they're referring to a retelling.

message 14: by Nicole (new)

Nicole A court of silver flames IS NOT YA!!!!! How is GR promoting it as such?? There are very explicit sex scenes between 18+ characters... I thought we all agreed that ACOTAR is not YA? Did Goodreads not get the message?

alina Gregory wrote: "Richelle Meads third book in the Age of X series needs to come out already !!!"

I’m still holding out with the barest of hope that this gets released in the near future.

message 16: by marlein (new)

marlein A Court of Silver Flames is NOT a Young Adult book! Please stop promoting it as such, there is very graphical content as well as explicit sex scenes that are generally not suitable for 12-18 year old readers, which is the target audience for YA.
