Exactly.

Same with Rhythm of War.
Sanderson is my favorite author but it's weird seeing his book there when it's only coming out this week.
Though GR Choice awards is a popularity contest, nothing more, so it really doesn't matter too much.

November releases. No one has had time to read it unless they had an ARC. The cutoff should be end of September.

Because it is obama's book..rhetorical question buddy

My thoughts exactly. There were many books on the list that weren't even published. Atwood's poetry book was on the list before it was published, as well.

Also big showing for Kuang's Burning God!

At least there's been 19 preview chapters of Rhythm of War available (one every week from summer till release day), so the most eager have been able to read a little over 20% of it already.

IKR!

They do this with books all the time for The Goodreads Choice Awards. The Choice Awards don't even make sense because unless you've actually read all the nominated books, how can you vote on the best one? People will just vote for the 1 book they've read in each category. It's just a popularity contest and this is why authors like Sarah J. Maas always win when they're nominated, even if their book came out close to the cutoff to be considered for that year.

agreed. ofc that's kind of how the choice award always ends up working tho. i just vote by author/cover/synopsis anyway (pls don't hate lol)

Partly true... I have no doubt that this is, in part, a popularity vote. Okay, MOSTLY a popularity vote.
But you can't claim no one has read it. There are hundreds, if not thousands of us who work as professional book recommenders (librarian here!) who have had access to an advanced reader copy.
Just sayin'... you're not entirely wrong, but you're not entirely right either. :)

Same goes for Rhythm of War. It just came out TODAY and is already one of the frontrunners in its category for the Goodreads Choice Award, beating out titles that came out much earlier.
I know the GCA is one big popularity contest, and doesn't mean anything, but take a look at the votes sometime. The winner, runner up, and maybe third place almost always have more votes than times added to a user's shelf.
There needs to be an earlier eligibility cutoff date or condition users have to meet before they can cast a vote. A horse winning a race before the starting gun is fired is a race in name only.

If you look at the pre-sales (even just the number of pre-sales at Amazon) there can be no doubt that this is one of the best sellers of the year. The select "pre-readers" all rave about it. Do I need to have read it before I voted for it? No. I am going to love it because it will be truthful, filled with facts, and the honesty of his thoughts and hopes will be there--as they were in his previous books. If I could vote the second volume as book of the year 2020, I would. After four years of insanity, thoughtful intelligent people who deal only in reality are desperate to read this.

Not on this list but also published today, I want to read These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong.

Agreed!

Fully agree, political move.
Rhythm of War is my thing.

Yes.

You are 100% right. No reason it can't make it to the 2021 list of nominees.

This is somewhat inaccurate. Everyone who is anyone in the lit world probably got an advanced copy of this book so they could read and rate it/talk about it. Also journalists, celebs, talk show hosts etc. Many many people have already read the book even though it was just released to us plebes today.
Also, went to buy this audiobook on Play Books today and it was 50 d*mn dollars. Lol, no.

All readers should be able to vote on a book they can access and read, not just those that have the ability to access advanced copies.

Ahhh, now I get it, thank you for the answer John!

The Killer's Shadow: The FBI's Hunt for a White Supremacist Serial Killer
I am about 35% finished and it is interesting and about a case I was unfamiliar with.

Absolutely correct.

November releases. No one has ha..."
Exactly. How about waiting until March or so to start voting?
