Cendaquenta Obama's book should not be a Goodreads Choice Awards nominee this year. It's made it all the way to the final round before even being released. I've no doubt it will be a very powerful memoir but it seems unfair for it to be dubbed a "best book of the year", when nobody has actually been able to read it yet.

Same with Rhythm of War.
Sanderson is my favorite author but it's weird seeing his book there when it's only coming out this week.

Though GR Choice awards is a popularity contest, nothing more, so it really doesn't matter too much.

message 5: by Sneha (new)

Sneha The Orchard sounds like my cup of book !!

message 6: by Denise (new)

Denise Obama’s book: he has a popularity bonus, you are right!

message 9: by Javin (new)

Javin Ohara Why is Obama's book on there when no one even read it

message 10: by Whitney (new)

Whitney The GR awards does this every year. Books that are released up until the final day of voting are eligible, which makes zero sense. It’s unfair to late October/early
November releases. No one has had time to read it unless they had an ARC. The cutoff should be end of September.

message 11: by Lindi (new)

Lindi yes i don‘t get the Obama book mentioned here as well.

My thoughts exactly. There were many books on the list that weren't even published. Atwood's poetry book was on the list before it was published, as well.

message 14: by Matthew (new)

Matthew Manchester It's been two weeks and I'm back. Good job, Goodreads. Thank you. Nice to see Sanderson up front and highlighted.

Also big showing for Kuang's Burning God!

They do this with books all the time for The Goodreads Choice Awards. The Choice Awards don't even make sense because unless you've actually read all the nominated books, how can you vote on the best one? People will just vote for the 1 book they've read in each category. It's just a popularity contest and this is why authors like Sarah J. Maas always win when they're nominated, even if their book came out close to the cutoff to be considered for that year.

message 20: by Sherri (new)

Sherri I love Brandon Sandersons Books!

agreed. ofc that's kind of how the choice award always ends up working tho. i just vote by author/cover/synopsis anyway (pls don't hate lol)

Partly true... I have no doubt that this is, in part, a popularity vote. Okay, MOSTLY a popularity vote.

But you can't claim no one has read it. There are hundreds, if not thousands of us who work as professional book recommenders (librarian here!) who have had access to an advanced reader copy.

Just sayin'... you're not entirely wrong, but you're not entirely right either. :)

Silver - Have a great day, you're loved I'm kind of disappointed Shannon Messenger's middle grade Unlocked isn't here... I'm waiting anxiously for my copy to arrive sometime this week!

Silver - Have a great day, you're loved Eartheater's "if you like" section is very specific... can't say I've read much about ladies who eat the soil of the earth and have mystical visions.

Same goes for Rhythm of War. It just came out TODAY and is already one of the frontrunners in its category for the Goodreads Choice Award, beating out titles that came out much earlier.

I know the GCA is one big popularity contest, and doesn't mean anything, but take a look at the votes sometime. The winner, runner up, and maybe third place almost always have more votes than times added to a user's shelf.

There needs to be an earlier eligibility cutoff date or condition users have to meet before they can cast a vote. A horse winning a race before the starting gun is fired is a race in name only.

If you look at the pre-sales (even just the number of pre-sales at Amazon) there can be no doubt that this is one of the best sellers of the year. The select "pre-readers" all rave about it. Do I need to have read it before I voted for it? No. I am going to love it because it will be truthful, filled with facts, and the honesty of his thoughts and hopes will be there--as they were in his previous books. If I could vote the second volume as book of the year 2020, I would. After four years of insanity, thoughtful intelligent people who deal only in reality are desperate to read this.

message 28: by Kathy (new)

Kathy Allard On this list, I only want to read R.F. Kuang's The Burning God.

Not on this list but also published today, I want to read These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong.

message 34: by Patrick (new)

Patrick I'm sorry why did somebody write a book about geophagia and make it sound "mystical"? Not a very light subject, not intriguing in the least- it is a serious condition. Maybe I'm just looking at the surface level, any insight? I know its been talked about in magical realism novels before but why...

You are 100% right. No reason it can't make it to the 2021 list of nominees.

Diana Cendaquenta wrote: "Obama's book should not be a Goodreads Choice Awards nominee this year. It's made it all the way to the final round before even being released. I've no doubt it will be a very powerful memoir but i..."

This is somewhat inaccurate. Everyone who is anyone in the lit world probably got an advanced copy of this book so they could read and rate it/talk about it. Also journalists, celebs, talk show hosts etc. Many many people have already read the book even though it was just released to us plebes today.

Also, went to buy this audiobook on Play Books today and it was 50 d*mn dollars. Lol, no.

All readers should be able to vote on a book they can access and read, not just those that have the ability to access advanced copies.

message 39: by Mariah (new)

Mariah Crabtree Isn't every book on this list brand new? That's why it's on the list as books people are excited to read? I don't get why people are saying Obama's book shouldn't be on here since no ones read it.....but no ones read the others either unless you received an advanced copy. I'm just confused. If I'm wrong could someone explain it to me, i'd appreciate it. Thank you!

message 40: by John (new)

John Hey Mariah, people are commenting on A Promised Land's presence in the later rounds of the 2020 Goodreads awards. Not on its presence in this list, which is where it belongs.

message 42: by Kyle (new)

Kyle Pretty much everything in the Goodreads Choice Awards is stuff that hasn't been released, they should reschedule these awards for the beginning of the next year.

message 43: by Amy the book-bat (new)

Amy the book-bat If you like true crime, the new John Douglas book is out today.
The Killer's Shadow: The FBI's Hunt for a White Supremacist Serial Killer
I am about 35% finished and it is interesting and about a case I was unfamiliar with.
