Sign into Goodreads with your Facebook or Google login

Posted by Otis Chandler on September 1, 2009
We've just fully launched a new feature we've been beta-testing for a while: the ability to login or register for Goodreads with your Facebook or Google login credentials!

This will be very useful for many members as it means less hassle of having to remember your password in order to use Goodreads.

Want us to add other OpenID providers? Mention them in the comments!

Kara Babcock Firstly, I love that you've added Facebook Connect and Google. But why would you need to "add other OpenID providers"? Would it not be better to simply add a single OpenID sign-in and explain to people that they probably already have an OpenID? Adding individual providers fragments the concept of OpenID and further contributes to confusion surrounding the standard.

Secondly, does the implementation of Facebook Connect mean that users who signed up to Goodreads through the Facebook application can now access the site itself? I have a friend who joined through the application, and she can only manage her books through the Facebook application (which isn't as nice as the site).

Otis Chandler Ben: great points. The answer to the first one is that OpenID is a great idea but too technical for most people. The way we've done it is much more user-friendly, albeit limited to two providers. We absolutely intend to add an OpenID sign in in the future however to cover the rest. There were other benefits of adding Google and Facebook that made it a higher priority.

Yes I think it does mean your friend can now access the site.

Maree Cox-Baker I have been using the facebook goodreads link for a while now and whatever change that was made in the last few days has made it impossible for me to access my goodreads account through facebook. I have also encountered the same friends difficulty that Ben mentioned in his comment above, friends that joined goodreads via facebook don't show up in goodreads only show up through facebook. Until all the bugs are worked out I am going back to using goodreads and facebook separately!

I just don't want to see something like, "Sign in with your: LiveJournal, WordPress, AIM, ..." etc.; such a dilution of OpenID only exacerbates the public perception of it as "too technical for most people."

I understand the desire to distinguish among Facebook, Google, and OpenID; the former two are exceptions because they provide much more than just OpenID authentication (and yes, they're also far better known than OpenID in general, and I accept that). Like I said, I don't mind that Facebook Connect was the first step. I can't wait for a generic OpenID sign in one day.

Thanks for another cool improvement.

message 9: by January (new)

January Okay, now how about some innovation on the site itself? I'd be happy to suggest some tweaks to make it more user-friendly if you're interested. It doesn't seem to have changed much since the launch (at least it doesn't look that way from here).

Anyway, let me know if you'd like my feedback.

message 12: by Jenni (new)

Jenni Pertuset Is this why every time I log out of goodreads I'm also inexplicably logged out of facebook? Whatever the reason, it's irritating as hell.

message 13: by Margaret (new)

Margaret I have had a problem with my goodreads/facebook functionality. I don't know if this will help or not. But I have a goodreads account and so does my son. For some reason, when my post a new goodreads book to my goodreads account it doesn't list my book to goodreads. It does list my son's books though onto facebook as if they were my own. So I had to take it off.

message 14: by Otis (new)

Otis Chandler Meg: sounds like your Facebook account was linked to the wrong Goodreads account. Here's how to fix that:

message 18: by Louise (new)

Louise Chambers Sorry... I am not happy. This new beta-or whatever-is not as good as the former app. Now you have two Open IDs, whereas before you had several. You haven't added Wordpress, even tho it is one of the top two blogging sites.

Most annoying, I can't get my books to show the correct status.

Beta no fun. Alpha put her foot on Beta's neck and say, "Stop messing around, and just give us a decent app".

Thanks ever so.

♥ Marlene♥ I tried but I am using the same email address on goodreads as on Facebook and they say I can't log in when i try to log in on GR like that. I assume most people use the same address? Or am i doing something wrong?

message 22: by Tess (new)

Tess I love Goodreads, but I'm not happy with whatever Facebook is doing in it's upgrades. Nothing seems to work properly anymore. It used to update my Goodreads box on my profile page automatically before and now, it doesn't update anything.

Same problem Marlene!

Kristen Like Tess and Marlene above... my reviews used to appear on my profile now don't. The button at the bottom of the review to share is checked, but no matter what I do, the review doesn't appear on my fb profile. That was one of the things I liked best!

Oh... and I made sure they are linked... don't have 2 profiles on fb or accounts here at gr. It just doesn't populate. Grrr...

Natalie Why is it that when I am already logged into goodreads outside FB, everytime I click on a title in goodreads in IE a "Login to FB" dialog appears and obscures the book info? arrgh. I don't really desire or want GR app to keep presenting a FB login opportunity to me? how do I make that go away?

Ronald P.chavez Winds of Wildfire Rages with Passion

Amee Brooks drifts west from Boston after a failed romantic fling and lands in Taos, New Mexico, an ancient land living the last vestiges of the old West. After buying a cabin on an acre of land where she plants a garden at a time of a severe drought her neighbor, Araña, cuts off her water at the mother irrigation ditch. She angrily confronts him which results in a brutal encounter flamed with bigotry. In despair, she hikes at Wild Rivers on the Rio Grande Gorge. There she meets Donato, a poet of Spanish ancestry. She finds Donato intriguing but strangely frightening.
Donato is seeking closure from the tragic loss of his wife in a road accident. He isolates himself from the world as a volunteer caretaker at Wild Rivers. Donato invites Amee to shoot pool at the VFW in the remote village of Cerro after she reveals her problem with Araña. He introduces her to Vidal, an elder in the village who knows the lay of the land and local politics.
There, Amee is ushered into a confusing Spanish culture. Vidal offers to help Amee. She meets Polly the bartender, a Viet Nam Vet who struggles with his war demons. Finally, Amee begins to feel she belongs.
Meanwhile, Billy, an Indian lad from Taos Pueblo makes a life altering decision after a life of booze and drugs when he absorbs a beating over a girl. He elects to live in the mountains above Taos. To his astonishment, he discovers an ancient horde of gold and is beset with a mind blowing dilemma.
Fate intervenes. Billy lands up at Cerro Bar. Polly is wrongly accused of a crime. Thus a series of events involving conflicting forces in a land of three living cultures is set in motion. Intrigue, unrequited love, courtroom drama, sexual tensions and soul searching unfold in sensuous, complex relationships in a backdrop of the sensuous brilliance of the Southwest’s offerings.

Michael How do you link an already existing Goodreads account to Google? The only place I see anything about signing in through Google is under the "Sign up" area.

message 34: by Patricia (new)

Patricia Morais Hi! I started my Goodreads account by login in through facebook, now everytime I want to go to gooreads I need to have fb. But I'm moving to a country where facebook is blocked, how do I start logging in with e-mail without losing all my data?

Michelle Promotion's for Indie Author's csmindiepr Finally Goodreads has again gone up and beyond to make our lives easier, as blogger's, reviewers, Beta-readers plus to just sit and enjoy the read., not having to find a password for the different devices we use will make life far more enjoyable.
The one problem with all the technology details are the numerous passwords needed to sign into the many sites we have to use.
But you've now made our lives far easier to list our books, post our reviews and join into the terrific groups available to help us with our love of being a bibliophile.
Thankyou Goodreads,
Michelle Chantler
