The Need to Read

Posted by Elizabeth on April 20, 2007
I don't know about everyone else, but this site has made me slightly manic to read more.

I'll take a look at the most popular books on the site and suddenly think, "Hey wait! I've never read Animal Farm. That must be a crime." Then I go to the "currently reading" shelf in "top shelves" and I realize that I've never experienced The Namesake or Freakonomics. More panic.

In the past four months, I've gone from feeling like I have nothing good on the horizon to read besides random chick lit books, which seem to find their way to me without any effort at all, to having books stacked by my entryway, in piles by my bed, overflowing my bookshelves, and tucked away in all sorts strange places in my apartment.

It's a little overwhelming, but also kind of cool. At the very least I feel like I'm experiencing some quality personal growth.

Has anyone else fallen prey to this phenomenon? I think we should coin some sort of word, like Goodreads-itis or Goodreads-enza. I'd take some suggestions...
