I have "The Hidden City Murders: A John Granville & Emily Turner Historical Mystery (John Granville & Emily Turner Historical Mysteries Book 6)" by Sharon Rowse on Pre-order for Release on July 11/19

Being from Australia, I do notice that Goodreads is mainly based on American authors. I too prefer to read more 'International' writers, learn about different cultures.

Same here. I get recommendations based on books I've given one star to.

The Just-About-Cocky Ms M wrote: "I ignore any and all "recommendations," alleged "Great Books Hitting the Shelves," and so forth because these "choices" are too often skewed by factors other than what many readers actually read an..."
I usually ignore recommendations because I continually get them, based on books shelved on my "Canadian Authors to Read" shelf, for books written by UK or US or Australian or other authors . That makes no sense to me at all. I even had books recommended based on books on my "Aborted" (did not finish) shelf! Maybe the real criteria for a recommendation is that the book isn't selling too good.

Goodreads should actually pay someone real money to produce an actually useful list of new releases. This reads like the work of an under/non-paid intern whipped off using crappy algorithm in their lunch break.

Very true. One with over 300 sock puppets gamed it's way onto one of these GR lists not long ago.

The Recommendations based on shelves is notoriously bad. It doesn't look at your shelf name at all, just what books it sees as "similar" due to it's algorithm. I'll get books that aren't even remotely similar recommended simply because the book it's going off of and the book being recommended are both Middle Grade, or something. So I end up with things like Realistic Fiction being recommended from my Harry Potter shelf.
It's a known issue GR has been asked repeatedly for YEARS to improve, but has not.
You can go to edit your shelves and select which you receive Recommendations for and which you don't. So, if you don't want to get recs based on your "Aborted" shelf (and why would you), just untick that one for Recommendations.
