THE FIRST WALK

When they’re off, there’s no stopping them.

I thought this was the case since Smiley had been crawling for a few months. She was go, go, go, non-stop. She walked along the edge of things with support for about the same amount of time, as well.

When it came to her actually getting up to walk, though, her body told her no, no, no. It forced her to slow down, which was nice for this not-so-quick Dad. She would take 1 or 1.5 steps at most before rocking and then smashing on her butt to the floor.

She would also stand in place for about 15 to 20 seconds before having the same result. This process took place for a couple weeks, making my job much simpler, much slower.

But then my wife sent me a video. And the slow days disappeared.

Friends of ours invited my daughter and wife to a kid’s play-land full of inflatable bounce houses. Kids were everywhere.

As my wife tells it, the kids she was with ran all over the place. So in order to keep up with them, Smiley told herself one thing. “It’s time to go.”

So she got up and walked.

It was like she was holding in this new skill for months, waiting for the right moment to showcase it for the world to see. She was off and she hasn’t stopped since.

I currently can’t write more than this. I’ll have to run her down if I do. My life has now become a never-ending Dad and baby chase.

-When your kids starts walking, pray and pray a lot. It’s the only thing that will help slow them down.-
